I wonder where the sympathy goes? Britain loves an underdog. The cocky, untitled public schoolboy shouting everyone down with what is clearly BS or the red, rattled and frustrated everyman that more people can relate to?

As a QC (KC) he'd be allowed to gradually present the evidence and build the argument point-by-point to the conclusion.

I would rather that in a leader in discussions with other governments and so on than someone who just shouts out totally false 'evidence' over and over again. This is why Sunak can't negotiate - once his initial shouty argument is debunked, he has nowhere to go.

But that format didn't enable that point to be reached.

Perhaps not quite the trouncing some on here claim?

Starmer showed a bit of personality towards the end, spoke well on Gaza. The format did nobody any favours and Sunak won the “tactical battle”.

Starmer was a deer in headlights for the first 15-20 minutes and I was getting very concerned for him. Not a good first “hello” to many people who don’t know who he is.

Can't help but feel themed debates would be better, one on the NHS, one on immigration etc...

Whatever your views, these are all complex issues which would be hard to sum up in 45 seconds even without all the politician waffle.

This is true. An informed decision can't be made in such a debate. But the politicians know that and play to it.

Sunak 'won' for me because he detailed policy. But he has the benefit of a long run up.

I don't vote Tory though. And I'm not going to.

But going back to my opening post, many people had their result of this long before it started, and I suspect that is reflected in that poll outcome.

I won't be voting for either of the main parties and I'm not a great admirer or either leader, but I don't see how any impartial viewer (and there won't be many, of course) could watch that and think Starmer performed better.

Why can't someone point out to Sunak - WHAT WAS THE ALTERNATIVE? Not operating the furlough? That would have ended well. All rich countries were doing some sort of furlough. It wasn't his idea.

What was his idea was 'Eat out to Help out' which resulted in thousand more covid deaths and another lockdown. He didn't design it to kill people but Rishi Sunak is a terrible human being.

In the context of the format they both had to work with, he was head and shoulders ahead of Starmer.

Like an aggressive courtroom lawyer being told to stop by the judge, he just kept going to ensure the "jury" got to hear his point.

Beyond that, just a far more polished and confident speaker.

None of this matters of course, which Starmer and Labour must be thankful for. I imagine they'll be doing their best to get out of doing any more of these,

Fair enough, but the aggressive courtroom lawyer wouldn't have been able to get away with it by a competent judge. There wasn't one tonight. But Malcolm Tucker and his sidekicks would have been screaming at the TV, and would currently be giving Starmer a dressing down.
