Standing in seated areas

Firstly the real reason for a Saturday home win can now be revealed - I wasn't there! I took my two offspring (can't call them children anymore as one's 18) to Craven Cottage to see Fulham v Newcastle. We got our tickets from Newcastle so we were right in the middle of all the 'crazy Geordie boys' - and we all stood for the entire 90 minutes. It was BRILLIANT and I really enjoyed it. Stuff the fact it was a poor game between two poor teams and I was basically a neutral, standing (as we all know) is far more in keeping with the excitement of football (especially with 6,500 Geordies) whereas sitting down is what you do for the cinema or theatre.

Not once did a Steward tell us to sit down, not even a token gesture. Surprise surprise nobody got hurt, and also there was none of that constant standing up and down (and subsequent resentment) to accommodate latecomers and/or people going from/to the toilets or refreshment stalls. We all get annoyed by that but on Saturday people just squeezed between us and the seats and you hardly knew they were passing.

So why don't we unite? If the majority of fans at every club stood they couldn't close all the grounds, could they?

Oh, and I'm pleased to say everybody sat (or rather, stood in front of) the seat that was allocated to them!

Plastic fan.

Only kidding. Im sure the FA could close all the grounds of they wanted to. Either that or just fine the clubs involved. Not really a good idea in our current curcumstances.

That's my point though, if we all did it, if there was some concerted 'Day of Action' then they couldn't fine/close down every club. Or perhaps they could, perhaps that's what they want: after all an empty all-seater stadium must be a far safer environment than one that's full of fans!

At the risk of sounding a bore, staying standing for the whole game in a seated area DOES bring an element of risk, specially when kids are involved. If everyone stays standing, it means the only way my 10 year old can actually see the game is by standing on his seat, with me holding on to him (which is what has had to happen on occasions when sections of the South Stand have stood up and stayed up for a period of time). Not ideal.

I just yearn for those terraces. I'm going to a Brentford match next month - dunno who they're playing, but just the novelty and joy of standing behind the goal is something I'm really looking forward to.

The whole reason for getting people to sit down is safety and it's something the council or somesuch want enforcing.

Brovian has a very good point.

If we all did it, the muppets who claim to be in charge of football would have no choice but to listen.

If we all did it, what would happen is that a few of the councils that hand out the safety licenses, would close areas of certain grounds as by all the standing the clubs would be in breach of the Safety Certificate and so clubs would lose revenue.

I worte to Southampton after our game there earlier in the month as I was pissed off at the way the stewards aggressively made us sit whilst the home fans continued to stand. Basically Southampton fobbed me off with a bland 'all the home fans sat down' drivel that I have now complained the the FL, whom I had copied in to my e-mail correspondence.

All clubs whose fans stand are being threatened with reduced allocations in future so I have asked the FL to be consistent.

The Leeds fans stood the whole game and there did not appear to be a problem. Well apart from the fact that they probably couldn't see anything, except Mr D'Urso cheating on their behalf!!

too right mate - they are f***ing ruining the game for the old "standers" - i hope Brentford and Colchester come up (and we stay up!!) as they have those terraces. also love it when we play Posh away!

thing is mate - i am quite happy to get away with standing at say 60% of away games (luton was a prime example) - but if we complain about the away fans at withdean and stuff like that it will become 100% enforced everywhere which would be bollox.

if the general feeling is away fans can get away with standing then so be it - we do play away every other week anyway!!:lolol:

They could fine every club, its not really that difficult. I doubt they would close whole grounds but i expect sections could be closed. I prefer to sit anyway, Standing makes no difference and you can still sing.

But what could have happened if Newcastle scored twice in the last few minutes? Those 6,500 Geordies would have gone mad and that's when injuries are most likely to happen aren't they? Don't get me wrong I hate sitting at football but can understand the safety issue as i've had more than a few cuts, grazes, bruises from madly celebrating goals. I'm a big bloke I can take it, but I can easily see a little kid getting squashed underneath a pile of bodies.

Actually we were going mad when there was a CLEAR penalty turned down towards the end. The Fulham player handled right in front of us. It's a valid point about injuries, but I think it's all down to how you assess risk. I've been taking my 18 y.o. daughter since she was 5 and we used to go into the old North Stand (RIP). A few mental celebrations of goals in those days but she used to love it. Some people might say I'm a 'bad parent', for exposing her to the potential risk of injury but, well, there you go.

Do it at Wembley then.

The first game played at the new ground to be declared "Stand up for football" day or something. 90,000 fans standing for 90 minutes.

marvellous scences

Not sure what difference it would make.

People have got use to sitting and I doubt clubs want standing back. More money to be made through selling seats than there is for standing tickets.

I know what you mean, chances are no one is going to get seriously hurt, but I think there is still some potential for a child to get flattened, which is partly why the terracing ban is in place. As much as I love standing I can't ever see terracing making a comeback
