For any of you planning to try out the new Sportsman Carvery tonight, the pub is open, but be warned, they have no real ale at the moment! Apparently they plan to get the real ale back but it will be about 4 weeks before they reinstate the beer lines that had to be taken out to fit in the carvery!!

I'm sure the carvery will be quality as they are advertising it for just £3.50, all day Monday to Saturday!

Why people actually bother with the Sportsman for a pre-match watering hole remains a complete mystery to me.

Why would anyone "Plan" to go to the Sportsman Carvery for a £3.50 meal?

"Darling, what are we doing a week on Thursday, I was thinking we could book our usual table at the Sportsman for a romantic £3.50 supper of dry chicken and fatty beef..what say you?"

Close to the ground, not overly expensive and an attractive emo barmaid. Also there don’t seem to be many alternatives around.

You spend longer queing at the bar there than you would walking a mile or so to the ground from a half decent pub. The Sportsman is utter SHIZER.

That's my logic about pretty much any chain pub. I was obliged to go to the Harvester last week as my mates were all heading there for dinner and so against my better judgement i gave it a go. What a heap of steaming TURD!

Did you know they actually sell some Steaks in there now for £15! In HARVESTER for fucks sake! Going to eat out at a cheap chain pub is bad, going to eat out at an expensive one is even worse yet there were still couples in there! I would chop off my bollocks then grill and eat them before I took a bird to Harvester!

If you are gonna go for a meal, just decide what type of food (Indian, Thai, Grills, Italian, Spanish) you want to eat then go somewhere that specialises in it! That way for the same price you get something FRESH not MICROWAVED!

Rant over :angry::angry:

What would you recommend as a decent alternative with Good beer/ale, decent mix of people and a reasonable distance from the ground?

Well, I USED to go to the Long Man, up Carden Avenue. But the beer prices there are like some kind of sick JOKE, so I don't bother with that any more.

Personally, I go to the Nevill in Hove now. Its not walking distance, but its only a 6-7 minute drive along the A27/A23 from there to where I park, followed by a brisk 12 minute walk to the ground. Cheap beer, Sky sports, nice garden, decent food.

Ticks all my boxes. Not much use if you're not driving though, admittedly.

I will certainly be availing myself of the £3.50 Carvery before home games. Usually it is a mediocre burger and chips at half time for over a fiver, so I can eat better for less.

You drink in the pub, and then drive to the ground ?

I would wait until you have tried it before making the statement that it is better.

Maybe somebody could report back on what the bar service is like tonight. Who knows, they may even have got their act together since the refit. Suspect not tho eh?

I’ll post my findings after the game.

I don’t think the bar staff were all that bad before but they were guilty of breaking the number one rule of being a barman/girl, remembering who is f**ing next! In my experience this is the quickest way to piss off the punters.

I think they should install a ticket numbering system at The Sportsman, like what you get at the deli in Tesco.

I said that as a joke, but actually having thought about it now, I think thats cuffing GENIUS. :)

As a bar man of many years experience it is almost impossible to remember who is next. Especially if they are all wearing the same thing. For example football shirts.

It comes down to common curtesy from your fellow queuees (queuers?) to ake sure people get served in order.
