Quick question for the NSC. As this is the 1st time in over 18 years of driving I have been handed a £60 fine and 3 points on my spotless licence for doing a meesly 38mph. Will this increase my car insurance ??:dunce:

I got three points for jumping a red once. It was considered spent at the end of last year so I now have a spotless licence again.

Anyway my insurance never went up, only down.

Mind you I was probably supposed to tell the insurance company about the points...

after 3 points, unlikely, when you get to 6, the decrease margin won't be as much, but unlikely to go up (for speeding)

My insurance went up about 20% when I collected 3 points after getting speedgunned..

I would assume any insurance claim you attempt to make when you have failed to declare points on your licence would be instantly invalidated. Its not like they need much of an excuse to wriggle out of paying up.

Really? As a 21 year old (at the time) driving quite a 'sporty' car, my insurance still went down even with 6 points, as the NCB was worth more!

I shopped around as well but the quotes were all similar once I was ticking the "points on the licence ?" box. This was about 7 or 8 years ago so can't remember the exact figures, but I'm sure there was a hike in it of around 20%. Mind you, I didn't have any NCB as I'd T-boned an MG the year before.

Probably due to the high point you must have started at.

Sometimes they find out, sometimes they don't.

As people have pointed out above, however, if you have to make an insurance claim, and it comes to light that you've failed to declare points, then they are likely to reject your claim because you've contravened the terms of the policy. It's not like insurance companies need an excuse to decline a claim, so best not to give them the opportunity I would suggest.

I can't imagine 3 points would increase a premium that much anyway. Apart from where young drivers are involved.

Depends on your insurer. Some insurers tend to expect that a lot of drivers will get caught once for speeding at some point in their life given the amount of cameras, etc, there are nowadays (in fact some say they find it fairly unusual if someone hasn't been done before)

These insurers tend not to raise the cost of inurance if caught just once, but will do if you are caught a second time. However, it this depend on the person or how long they have been driving for - ie, a young, new driver who is caught is more likely to find their premium increases than an experienced driver with a previously clean record.

It may still pay to shop around when your renewal is due.

It ALWAYS pays, anyone who doesn't is just handing unnecessary cash over.

You MUST declare the points/conviction as soon as possible to your insurers, they are ALL tossers and will wriggle out of anything if possible. Most decent insurance companies will ignore your first three points, but after that they will hammer you for anymore. I should know having gone from 9 to 6 to 3 points, but I am now clean, honest guv!

I got 3 points and a £60.00 fine - and yes, my Insurance went up (Quite a bit)

For how long do you have to declare these?

Points remain on your licence for 4 years, but are 'spent' after 3 years, don't ask me why?

Cue 'why'?

Where I live, if it is your first offence (and your speed wasn't too excessive) they offer you a place on a speed awareness course (costs £60) instead of the fine and 3pts. Well worth enquiring.

The old ones are the best thanks to Tommy Docherty.

I've just renewed my insurance and picked up 3 points a few months ago - I asked what effect it had on the premium and, for me, it was only an additional £12
