Speed Camera Question

Barrel of Fun

Abort, retry, fail
Anyone think there should be no cameras, thus allowing people to drive as fast as they like?

That was my experience in Cuba, Ecuador, Malawi and some other countries (or at least speed limits were nor enforced), but the end result was normally a casualty for only the party involved as there were less cars and less car/meet/person situations.

People need to take responsibility for themselves and others and these endless speed camera/police vendettas are pathetic. Aside from that, most crimes involve a car, don't they?

I went througha speed camera some months ago and was livid with myself as I knowe the camera is there but fortunately nothing happened so there probably wasnt a film in the camera.

I read somewhere that eventually all those Blue cameras that are being installed for mainly traffic congestion etc will be equipped witha camera that will film every vehicle that passes it and every vehicle that speeds. It was something like 60,000 vehicles and hour that they can film using digital technology so if your vehicle is speeding or ius not taxed you will be nicked.

On the point of passing down speeding fines etc, I got snapped in a bus lane, going to QPR last time and the photo was so clear that you could read the badge and writing on my BHA polo shirt that I was wearing. Also that is how BZ and Sherringham got caught by somebody recognising them from the photos.

Before anyone points it out, my feelings on this matter aren't a standard copper's response, it's just something I've always felt.

the original criteria for positioning of a speed camera was accident hotspots.

now this is as we all know complete bollx.

the most notorious spot in sussex is handcross hill and in the 10 years since the introduction of speed cameras never has there a camera been positioned anywhere near it.

they should be ripped up from all the money making positions around the county and set to 20mph and placed outside every school instead.

the problem is about perception and presentation.

they are percieved as being used to generate revenue and save money by not having actual coppers on the beat. one police car driving up the A23 does alot more to keep everyones speed down than a half dozen cameras that everyone slows down for then speeds away from.

the accident blackspot issue has been shown to be a lie and thats poor presntation, i can think of a couple that are obviously sited to catch people out, ie just after a speed limit change and just after a hill.

we shouldn't ignore the limits, and indeed we should be strict on those in town, but how safe is it to drive along watching the speedo rather than the road?
