Anyone done one??

Been done for speeding and have been given the option to attend one of these courses so I don't get 3 points and fined. However it's 6 hours, in Maidstone and costs £110. They have given me a list of other places I can sit the course but the next closest is Thames Valley.

Really can't see the benefit of doing it to be honest when I can take the points and a fixed penalty of £60.

i have a mate who did it, the majority of it is practical aparently so just drive about for a few hours, then sit in the back while someone else drives. expect it works out cheaper than the increase in insurance in the long run too.

I'd do the course. The points are worth more than that to me.

If you do the course then you don't get the points on your licence and you also don't have to declare it on your insurance. The extra £50 for the course is probably cheaper than your increased insurance cost.

There are regular courses run in both East and West Sussex so not sure why they are sending you so far. I'd ask if you can do the course locally.

Out of interest are you automatically now offered the option of a course for a speeding offence, or is it at the discretion of, I dunno, the local police force or somebody? And if you're not, can you ask for one?

I think it depends on how far over the limit you were driving. on a 30 road, going between 33 and 37 qualifys for the course option, any higher and its automatic points. must be a percentage of the limit of something simular.

I've no idea to be honest, this is only the second time I've been done but the other one was probably 8 or 9 years ago certainly didn't get offered it then. The letter does mention something about how lucky I am to be given this "opportunity" and that it isn't offered to everyone. It then goes on to say I can't take the course more than once in a three year period so I took that as bullshit.

For the record I was clocked at 38 in a 30.

Found this on Speed Awareness Course - No Penalty Points (UK)

Who can go on the course?
Usually the drivers eligible will be those that have exceeded the legal limit but not by a huge amount. Each individual police force will decide what their margins are.

i think if you were probably very close to automatic points. My mate who did the course checked how much his insurance would increase when before he did the course if he took the points, and it was about £200-300 a year more. deffo worth the day out. just drive there slowly.

I am going on one this Thursday. It's at Stanmer Park so you can get them locally. I think the rules are that you can be doing no more than 38 in a 30 and it must be your 1st offence to be given the option of attending or taking the points.

I got done in North Wales and was offered a course - only trouble being I had to travel back to North Wales to do it.

No matter how carefull you think you're being you never know when you're going to get caught again so I decided to do the course; took the familly back up there to make the trip worth while and have a holiday up there.

My course was only three hours and cost £60, no driving but just discussing the plainly bleeding obvious with some arorgant fat twat. There were 20 people attending and there were six sessions a day - the £60 went to pay for the courses expenses apparently and didn't make any profit allegedly:jester:

I don't think you're always given the choice to do the course so when you are I suggest you take it.

Having had an sp30 conviction the summer, when the time came to renew my insurance last week I got two quotes: one declaring it and one not.

The difference?

£7.

Obviously age and driving history and any number of factors come into it, but I was surprised it was so little.

I am definitely not one to criticize but the quote "only 38 in a 30" may be a clue about speed awareness. I have been more aware of speed lately only due to two lucky escapes when other factors have entered into the equation of driving and speed that were out of my control.

Take the course mate, it's better than the points and may keep you out of an avoidable incident?

Climbing off soap box as you type!

Watchin the boats go by
This sounds like one of the stupidest criteria to attand a safety course ever:

You can attend if you were being a little naughty and went slightly over the limit but if you're nailing it round like a twat with no awareness for other road users or pedestrians you needn't bother???

What a crock of SHITE! Surely the better idea would be to MAKE people who are clocked at 10-30mph over the limit attend one of the courses as part of the punishment?
