The Spectrum 128 with the built-in tapedeck only ever came out in that design as far as I remember. Not getting it mixed up with an Amstrad are you ?

I think it's my memory playing tricks after all this time since I had my heart set on one!

I could murder a game of Bombjack right now with my Kempston joystick!

The Kempston was perfect for Bombjack because you could hover for ages to collect the Ps and Bs and gradually drift down the screen collecting the bombs.

i had the Speccy +2 (and never had a problem with the built in tape drive). i brought it soley on the basis of what games where available, think it might have come down to Dizzy not being on C64. the C64 was though clear better hardware and had a bit more life in it. in fact, i think some artist uses the sound chip to this day for doing synth sounds.
