The performances have been poor for a long time (even in the tournaments) so it was inevitable the results would decline at some point especially as he persists in picking his favourites regardless of club form. I would love to see him sacked as we’d finally have a chance of getting players called up. It’s just a shame Dunk hasn’t had the international career he deserved thanks to Southgate.

So much of that post for me, is not true, even as an ardent Brighton fan!

Southgate is a nice guy. Too nice. The team needs more fight to actually win anything. The performances are regularly dross.

I’m done with him time for a change.

Leyton, E10.
I'm somewhat ambivalent, esp aided by behaviour of the fans last summer at the euros. Really set me back a bit with my national pride.

For me the worst result possible is that we lose Potter to the national team marketing department. GS looks and sounds in trouble but it would be a strange time to change mgmt with a couple of games to go before the sports washing WC. So I'm hoping everything stays the same until the new year.

These are nothing more than glorified friendlies, Pickford in goal we lose that by 1 or 2, Ramsdale is the most overrated keeper in the league. I hope everyone sees that now, Sanchez is 5 times the keeper he is. No chance Southgate goes before the World Cup, and if he does the assistant gets it on interim. Let’s not be revisionist about Southgate, he took the team that finished bottom of a group containing Costa Rica and lost to Iceland, to a Semi Final and a Final. His ideas however maybe getting found out now, and after the World Cup England IMO need to look to a new direction (personally I’d go with a Foreign Manager), to get the most out this squad, as it needs to have the better Game Management and Selections of a club manager to succeed.

I was with you all the way until you mentioned a foreign manager.

For me, managers should have to qualify by nationality, same as players. I'm fed up of seeing European managers shipped into African nations and holding back their own Nations coaching development for example. Thankfully things are changing a bit on that particular front, but still not gone far enough.

In what way? Barring a bit of a slow start in the groups, we played very well in most games, arguably one of the best sides at the tournament.

Second half vs Germany, the Croatia game, the Ukraine game, decent against Denmark, took Italy to penalties.

We were a few inches to the right from winning the whole thing.

And if we had, millions (especially Scots) would said we didn’t deserve to for whatever reason. It’s very English these days to totally slag off your own country and moan about everything and anything we achieved in the past or will in future. We should have more confidence in ourselves but then I’m not sure we’re allowed to from what I read each day in some media channels like BBC and Guardian.

If this was a club manager he would be on the verge.

He’s absolutely hapless, same players, same tactics.

Posted this at H/T on the Nations thread (post 272) when it was only 0-1.

Now after 8 halves of football with no goals from open play and an absolute hammering at home, it's more apt now.

Which Premier League side would willingly replace their current manager with Southgate?

Yes, he started well and got the country behind the side. But tactically he's been found wanting and continues to be so. He's learned little from the tournament defeats against Croatia or Italy.

He's wasting the riches in attacking midfield with setting up defensively and committing few players forward. 2 centrebacks, 2 fullbacks with little incentive to get forwards, 2 midfielders plus the keeper - that's 7 defensively-minded players. When Kane drops deep to get the ball, it's 8. We're set up not to lose instead of trying to win.

Passing the ball backwards and sideways in your own half will dominate possession and passing stats, but cause the opposition no trouble.

Opposing sides just need to take a chance against us, as Hungary did 10 days ago and again this evening, and that's often enough to win or draw at worst.

Southgate deserves the H/T boos.

Yeah I can’t disagree with you there, I just look at the manager pool, and think we do lack someone with the desired qualities (game management etc) who is English, and I include Potter there, as much as he’s god, he does have his failings. I wouldn’t mind seeing someone become England manager that has a connection to the English leagues (someone like Wenger, Poch or Mourinho, obviously not them, but of that ilk), who really gets us, and can pass knowledge down.
