Many politicians get a knighthood now just for doing their jobs, so why not give it to a manager that did quite well but never won anything.

Wind back to pre Southgate. We were a joke, none of the players really wanted to play for England, and the country had given up on the team. It was really that bad. Succesive managers had failed despite having a golden era of players.

Under his leadership this was completely turned around and we reached two Euro finals and a world cup final.

By any measure he is the second most successful England manager in history.

He has also done that with dignity and humility.

Just because he is ex Palace and didn't pick Brighton players (generally) doesn't mean we can't respect what he achieved. He gave me some of my best England supporting moments ever. For that I'd happily knight him. Southgate you're the one.
Hang on a minute, someone above said that him being knighted is like Putin being given the Nobel Peace Prize.

How can both of these things be true? ???

I think people have forgotten how much the English national team had underachieved in the 50 years prior to 2016. Two major-tournament semis and quite a few tournaments we didn’t even qualify for.

England qualified with ease for every tournament under Southgate. I don’t think we even lost a qualifier in 4 tournaments.

When you draw Lapland and Antarctica that's what happens.

England’s 4 opponents for Euro 2024 qualifiers included the Euro 2021 champions and one of the quarter finalists.
Yeah, but facts...... they dont listen to facts. It's just a given that Southgate is apparently "rubbish, and should have (sic) won tournaments with the players he had".... despite (a) Other teams having great players too, and (b), England consistently getting further than with any other manager since Sir Alf Ramsay, and (c) those previous managers having at their disposal players like Keegan, Brooking, Bell, Marsh, Lineker, Robson, Hoddle, Beardsley, Waddle, Barnes, Shilton, Gerard, Lampard, Rooney, Beckham, Owen, Shearer, ....

Well.... I was on the site, and whilst responding to other posts, noticed that some had replied to a post of mine on here. I am so sorry if it seemed off topic. How dare I not keep bleating on and on about the 0-0 v Brentford tonight? Disgraceful. I ought be taken out and shot. In fact I'll ask Enciso to do it.... ah .. he's missed..... ah he's missed again.... and again... ok... maybe Ayari will be better ... nope he's blasted both barrels high over my head.....it seems Ive been reprieved.

What a load of utter bollox knighthoods are... they are an acceptance that the royal family (including for e.g. Andrew, Edward, Harry and the other collection of weirdos) are in a position of God-given authority to deem certain people of superior worth over others.
