My main problem with Southgate is that he genuinely doesn’t seem to be able to positively change a game in flight. He got the starting 11 spot on IMO but then his subs last night were baffling AGAIN. That’s not just him it’s his coaching team.

Whoever comes in has got at least one very tough decision to make - dropping Pickford. Pope saves that first one last night. I feel about Pickford for England as I did about Ryan for the Albion = he’s ok but we now need better. There’s a reason that no top 6 club has shown interest in Pickford.

It’s bigger than Maguire. What message does it send to players where it doesn’t matter how well you play you’ll never get picked. Conversely it doesn’t matter if you aren’t playing regularly you’ll still get picked. That is just not acceptable.
Which players are you referring to?

People who support the England team are often called arrogant and entitled. I don't think that's true. I think the entitled ones are the ones who constantly talk of England failing and not bringing home trophies.

How many times do we have to not win tournaments before people realise that getting knocked out in the knock out rounds is exactly our level. And has been for the entirety of the time that England have been playing in international tournaments?

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't our first foray into international tournaments end with us losing to the U.S? In the 72 years since we've made two finals, both on home soil. One of those finals was with Southgate. We've been beaten semifinalists four times. One of those was with Southgate.

Getting knocked out of the world cup by the reigning world champions in the quarter finals is the worst tournament performance we've had under Southgate.

A qf, a sf and a final is wildly succesful by England standards. And he's done this after taking over the England team when it was at it's lowest point in decades if not ever. Losing to Iceland in 2016 was the culmination of a decade of shite, a decade of the national team losing any connection with the fans and country.

We now have a team that the country can get behind, can like and be proud of. Well, most of the country...

With all that considered I think Southgate should stay. He deserves respect as his positives far outweigh his negatives. Of course he might feel he's taken us as far as he can. If he does go can we be confident of getting someone better?

I do think there's better options around centre half than slabhead. But to suggest if England's all time top scorer and captain aged 29 never plays again (with our first euro qualifier away to Italy in March) is progress, we'll thats just fickle madness.

He does a lot more than score goals, his link up play is excellent, you really think dropping Kane forever will improve England?
I don't care how good he is, he's a cheat And I don't like him. It's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

If it was me I. Would appoint the Chelsea ladies manager.

brilliant tactician, knows the game…doesn’t applaud her players falling over at the merest touch.

would be a really radical choice, but it’s about time we looked at winners
Except the women’s game is barely non league standard. Would you be happy with the Cowley Brothers in charge? They would have more success.
No chance. He's an autocratic despot like figure, he's fallen out with players and left behind toxic dressing rooms.

If we've learned anything from the Sven, Capello years, it's the culture/mentality and pride of pulling on the shirt is best served with an English manager.

If its anyone, it should be a modern/progressive Englishman. Tuchel may be better tactically but he'll be infinitely worse in other areas.
Big Sam went well 🙄

Should Southgate go to (or?) stay?

Yes

No

Sorry mate, but I don't understand the question. Even with my helpful edit.

Should Southgate stay? Options: Yes or no.

Apologies to the dozens of posters who have already made this point. A good point is always worth making multiple times.

Incidentally, @Guinness Boy will be delighted with this thread

Stirling terribly off form, Pickford compared to Pope for starters but you can add both Philips and Gallagher to the count. I rate
Philips but he’s been crocked all season.
Agree re Sterling but Phillips and Gallagher? Really?? Pope's time may come but he made a terrible howler in the last Nations League fixture v Germany which cost us a 3-2 win so can understand why Southgate kept faith with Pickford (and I think it's unreasonable for the likes of Keane to think he should had saved the first goal). Pickford had a pretty solid tournament.

Go.

Replaced by Howe or Tuchel.
I'm IN!!!

To be fair, Eddie Howe is clearly the leading contender. English, and capable of transforming relegation fodder into top six. He has the potential to take England to any quarter final.

You're other suggestion is best swiftly....oh look over there! Isn't that a thingummy. Crikey!

How many times have we been knocked out in the group stages then? Also, in my life time, we've only failed to qualify for 3 world cups, 74,78 and 94. So we've qualified for 10 through qualifying groups, once for hosting and once for being the holders. As for the finals, we've only once failed to get through the group stage (2014). The Euros are slightly different as it was a much smaller tournament, only 8 teams back in the 80s.

So your memory is playing tricks with you regarding getting knocked out in the group stages etc etc.

Southgate has navigated through relatively easy games but can't beat a top team even when in the driving seat. Has to go.
We didn't qualify for 66 or 70 either, to be fair. And before that all we had to do was beat Wales in Wrexham and Scotland at Wembley.

In the name of god, go.
:tumble::tumble::tumble:

(for your next expostulation about the way of it all, try this; it's a corker: "Out, damned spot; out, I say. One, two,—why, then ’tis time to do’t. Hell is murky. Fie, my lord, fie, a soldier and afeard? What need we fear who knows it when none can call our power to account? Yet who would have thought the old man to have had so much blood in him?")
