The last three tournaments have been very very weak, but imho England have never been better placed to win. Southgate got it wrong against Croatia and Italy. He’s too conservative in his approach and teams aren’t scared of us, we should have gone after France in the first half not wait until the second half to have a go.
I didn’t see it all that way. For me as soon as France went one up they sat back and we were by far the better side. We’re never going to fly out of the traps against a team with Mbappe in - that would be mental.

I hope you weren’t listening to Matterface. He called it wrong all evening

No I wasn’t. Is it wrong of me for not taking anything that someone with the surname matterface says seriously?

France a bit like the Dutch are a Uber confidence team. You hit them early, do it give them the time, break up their play and they then get very bent out of shape. They want teams to show them respect and don’t like when they don’t get it.

You can’t play every game the same way. Different teams, different tactics, something which I don’t believe Southgate does. He’s very one dimensional and also he’s not cut out to chase a game.

Overall I think he should stay... in spite of his Albion blind spot ... he’s okay I guess, but certainly no master tactician... (sadly) I genuinely can’t see an adequate replacement who’d take the job... its a bit meh, but he could win a tournament if his best players win it in spite of his shortcomings... the players, White aside, do seem to like him, which counts for a bit at international level.

Last night was a poor game and I can’t decide whether it was two good teams cancelling each other out, or two average teams not playing well ... whatever, the game lacked quality, rhythm a pattern - all somewhat dictated by a whistle happy ref and France pulling our strings slightly in terms of our mentality...

Hey ho - on we go :/

We have improved year on year, unfortunately this time we met the world champions in the quarter finals. Yes we lost a euro final to those plucky underdogs Italy … hardly some minnows.

But Low still got to ‘fail’ at 3 major tournaments before winning something, and with the youth of our team (Bellingham 19, Saka 21, Foden 22, James 22…) we’re in a good place.

I’ve still not seen any major tactical revelations so to why Southgate was ‘inept’ yesterday. We were the better team, we just didn’t score - a story we are all to familiar with.
how have we improved? Results in the nations league would say otherwise.

We lost to Italy not because they were any good but because Southgate got it wrong. I had calls the following weskin where the italian ripped the piss out me over the result. The Italian media basically said that in the cold light of day it was because England lost the game, not that Italy won. In his eyes the fact that Italy made the final spoke volumes for just how poor quality the Euro’s were. We blew it …

Totally agree with the talent coming through I just don‘t believe southgate will get the best out of them.

So how long are you going to give him?

Where’s the improvement that you would want to see year on year? It’s the same tactical approach every tournament and the same result.
we lost the Euro’s to a team that couldn’t qualify for the WC. Tell me why you beleive we’ll win the Euro’s in 2024?

When it comes to the games that matter we are found wanting.

Low is a much better coach and tactician than Southgate and was more successful at club level. Unlike Southgate is a bit of an arse.
Ok, Italy bizarrely failed to qualify for the WC, but, did you not think they were the best team at the Euros?

I think they easily were. Not just because they won it, but because they played the best football that I've ever seen an Italy team play in my lifetime. It was lovely to watch!

Nothing bizarre about it. They have been very very poor. As for the best football at the Euro’s and the best by an Italian team in years ….? No, definitely not.

Agreed, but it always gets a mention 🤷🏻‍♂️
I also don't buy into the international mangers favour players from clubs they've previously managed, they will pick who they think is the best player in that position regardless of who they play for. He's obviously decided he doesn't think Dunk is good enough and it's got nothing to do with who he plays for. Obviously I have no way of proving this.

Totally agree with this. My issue is picking players he liked rather than those who are on form. Picking players who aren’t regulars for the club side is just plain wrong.

Ok, fair enough. We'll have to agree to disagree on that one then, regarding their Euro's performance. I think Mancini had them playing the most exciting brand of football I've ever seen from an Italy team.

Football is all about opinions I suppose.

Dont care who does who has the job and Southgate is as good as anybody. Apart from putting up with the crap from supporters and media, job is a doddle. Only a few meaningful games and during this time watching loads of games and can select from best country players in country. Unless you cock it up both World cup and Euros set up with easy qualifiers and easy routes to last 16.

Trouble is, we don't see what goes on behind closed doors, in the dressing room and at training.
I can't say I'm always enamoured with some of his selections, but he clearly picks on the grounds of keeping a cohesive unit together and being a strong team, rather than a collection of the most talented individuals.

Personally I think it's a travesty Dunk in particular has consistently been overlooked, but then again I don't have all the evidence to work with (not saying Dunk isn't a good team player or is disruptive btw.)

In some cases I agree but in the case of Maguire I felt he was vindicated in his selection of him.
It’s bigger than Maguire. What message does it send to players where it doesn’t matter how well you play you’ll never get picked. Conversely it doesn’t matter if you aren’t playing regularly you’ll still get picked. That is just not acceptable.

I think we should sack our most successful of managers we have had in 50 years. Time we went back to being knoced out in the group stages, or not even qualifying. Much less stressful.
How many times have we been knocked out in the group stages then? Also, in my life time, we've only failed to qualify for 3 world cups, 74,78 and 94. So we've qualified for 10 through qualifying groups, once for hosting and once for being the holders. As for the finals, we've only once failed to get through the group stage (2014). The Euros are slightly different as it was a much smaller tournament, only 8 teams back in the 80s.

So your memory is playing tricks with you regarding getting knocked out in the group stages etc etc.

Southgate has navigated through relatively easy games but can't beat a top team even when in the driving seat. Has to go.
