I don't blame the government at all. Admittedly southern should have lost the franchise ages ago, but to do it now is wrong because southern are actually doing something useful & modernising the railway line by being rid of defunct roles.

Serious question, so far I've avoided travelling on strike days - next Tuesday I really should go to London and return on Thursday. Is it even worth me trying to get from Gatwick (or Three Bridges) to victoria - and back?

At a guess drive to Barnham. Park. Get the GWR to Waterloo and same for return journey.

Thameslink isn't affected, so a service from Brighton is surely best?

Barnham is serviced by GWR as well. I know this because I have had to do the Waterloo-Barnham route before when Croydon was log jammed and had to go the coastal route to get home.

Thameslink is an option but with a 55% punctuality rate (at best on a good day) without any risk of a signal failure (plenty) or a fatality (suicide season) and the trains will no doubt be fit to bursting.

For a day trip I would do the Barnham route. Change at Clapham.

That's obvious.

The Drivers drive the trains and clearly the trains can't run without them.

I guess that's not the case with the guards, hence the trains run on RMT strike days.

Before you go off on one, I'm certainly not on the side of Southern Management. They are clearly incapable of running a half decent rail service, and IMO the franchise should be taken away from them. A lack of staff, and a railway that seems to rely on people working their rest days is not going to be a success. The Villa fiasco was 100% down to incompetent management.

BUT, what has never been made clear to me is how DOO has been introduced on other parts of the railways (plus the tube of course which is much busier than any trains) and yet the RMT won't allow it on Southern? The inconsistency from the union has led to confusion.

The bottom line is that it's the paying passenger, the customer who is suffering, and neither party gives a Sh@t.

There's no such thing as an ASLEF and RMT strike day is there?

So, if it's an RMT strike day then you should be OK to travel direct from Shoreham to London as usual. If it's an ASLEF strike day, then you'll want Brighton for Thameslink I imagine,

Either Brighton and take your chances with rammmed Thameslink trains, or Havant/Petersfield and pick up South West Trains to Waterloo. GWR will only get you to London from the Thames Valley, as the only GWR service through Shoreham runs between Brighton and Bristol.

According to the SASTA site there is on the 16th. There may be others as for certain periods they just lump them together. As this is on Southern's site obviously it should not be relied upon.

It could be over in less than a week, certainly before the start of Aslef's strike action which is why they're doing this first, of course if Wilkinson/DfT tells SASTA not to settle on any circumstance then you may as well forget about train travel in Sussex for the foreseeable future.

Amazing isnt it how a government "department" for want of a better word can cripple a whole region. A region that is one of the most affluent and thus pays back into the economy probably ten fold. Incredible.

I hope the RMT and ASLEF twig soon that yes, Southern and the Government are awful but they're not listening and the best deal they're going to get is already on the table (and it's not a bad offer at all). DOO and then driverless trains is inevitable. Striking constantly is only hurting the wrong people - fellow workers - and that's why even I as a union member have totally lost sympathy. There's no solidarity on that end, and I lost solidarity at the second or third strike.
