Sack the drivers. Automated trains. Released by thr conductor is the way forward
I'm sure done to death on here and before I say anything
I travel south eastern from Kent of a day into London. This
service isn't brilliant, but nothing compared with Southern.
I travel Southern to the Albion home matches and boy that
can be fun sometimes.
I am 100% in support of the Union on this. For the following
single reason: I have been on crutches etc now and again and
appreciate the work that train guards do. They were the most helpful
people on the planet and so too station staff. And underground staff
as well. Amazingly helpful.
A guard on our south eastern train said that the plan to
assist disabled passengers at unstaffed stations (evenings etc) and
with no guard present was for the passenger to phone in advance so that a
member of rail staff could arrange to travel to be at that station to assist
at the scheduled time or whatever.
I stand to be corrected - but for me there is no way this can happen.
I'll leave you to work out the rest of the complete and utter disaster
that would be. Think bad weather, traffic, staff illness etc etc
The unions are lying.
Every single train I have travelled on on Southern has an onboard supervisor who gets off the train and checks the platform. Every single one. They are new staff too. And I see new ones being trained most days. This is about money and I hope unions and their selfish members get their comeuppance. Loathesome people holding people who actually want to work, to ransom. Disgusting people.
Pathetic fine. The most galling part is the phrase "unprecedented levels of sick leave were also to blame". Errr .... so make sure you employ enough drivers to cover sickness. As usual the government and the operator don't give a toss about the customer ...... much like the union lemmings as well.

If it's about money, why have the drivers turned down a 24% payrise (bribe) to drive DOO trains?
Because the cameras are inadequate, the platforms are curved, there are unmanned stations so disabled people have to book their journeys 24 hours in advance, and old rolling stock which are inadequate. The driver could go to jail, if an accident is deemed to be his/her mistake.

No it isn't. I have driven plenty of trains in the last week alone which haven't had an on-board supervisor. 12 coach train last week. No OBS. Smoke alarm. Train delayed whilst I had to shut down cab, inform signalled, walk back to deactivate alarm, set up cab again. Maybe it was a figment of my imagination. Lucky there wasn't a fire otherwise it's just me to evacuate up to 1500 people. But it's modernisation don't you know.
I am sincerely sorry you had to do some work. I hope through this latest industrial action you and your comrades will never have to face the prospect of leaving your seat again. And with the new intake of OBS you shouldn't have too much to do. Stay strong. No it isn't.
