This may be a stupid question, but what training do you need to dispatch the train?

If the platform is clear, and all pax on board, could the OBS then not inform the driver all is clear?? Os are things not that simple? surely thats what the cameras would have done?

Was on the same journey a few weeks ago when the cameras stopped working. The driver walked the length of the train to dispatch it at a few stations and said he couldnt be bothered to keep doing it so train cancelled at redhill. again....there was an OBS on board.

Like with most things, it's not difficult as such but does require proper training, the technical side of it (buttons, bell codes etc), proper route knowledge, emergency procedures etc and so on.
On your second question - to an extent this can work but the cameras are needed for one last check before power is taken - even in the old way of doing things. And in any case, surely if you are "modernising" then you should make sure cameras are of the best quality and fully functioning 100% of the time before you implement a new policy in a rush to appease the Dft?

So Saturdays now have no direct London trains Coastway West, once the footie season starts this will really begin to cause a lot of issues especially on Amex match days

So if you're a trainer for train dispatchers where do you train? On a train or in a training room?

It all seems very trying this training.

I don't understand the offer RMT have made today.

"RMT conductors saw the changes as a ploy to phase out a second person on trains. It has now proposed a six-month trial with two staff guaranteed on all affected services."

What is that a trial of? That is what was there before. What would it prove?

Southern are a bit a joke aren't there ?

They have cancelled my direct train to work, no great shakes because I'm 100% behind the staff.

.. but seemingly are unable to tell any commuters which trains aren't actually running.

The journey planner seems pretty accurate. I suppose as they have no overtime cover if someone phones in sick they will have to cancel their planned trips, so could be short notice cancellations.

West is BEST
It's an expensive nightmare. It's actually depressing me trying to get to work at the moment.

How many trains are they cancelling now?

I heard in the first couple of days it was up as high as 25% or so of scheduled trains cancelled. What that tells me is that Southern are trying to operate seriously understaffed. Trying to run a business 25% reliant on staff being willing and available to do overtime is just asking for trouble.

But it's the cheap option,a driver doing overtime doesn't require an extra pension, sick pay or holiday pay,
Said it before and say it again, one mans overtime is another mans job.

The interesting thing now with all this shit Southern stuff is the press really don't give a monkeys arse anymore. They've stopped reporting on it, or if they do report it, it's buried deep under other news which may or may not be more important.

"Oh Southern have f*cked their customers again? Don't waste space on that, go and report on Love Island instead."

If the bank is open I generally prefer to use a teller,of course if the bank had been closed down and replaced by a whole on the wall?
Do you not prefer to converse with a tax paying human?

i'm usually interested in the goods or service, the tax paying status is immaterial.

Not as explained to me by Southern staff.

The journey planner may well be accurate but that's the here and now.

There is no communication regarding which trains have effectively been cancelled until further notice.

It doesn't stop me turning up at the station and finding no train. They have simply disappeared from the timetable again.

The train I usually get has often been cancelled - even during the no strike periods - and listed as "cancelled". I emailed Southern and asked them

1) How often the train had been cancelled is the last 2 months ?
2) What was the cause of the cancellation ?

The reply ? We don't keep records of previous cancellations. I kid you not and suggested I sign up with a paid external service to find out.
