[Football] Southampton v Plymouth kick off 6pm

There have been various threads in recent times covering Saturday and Sunday evening kick offs. Also Boxing Day and 8 pm kick offs in evening matches. I haven’t seen anything on today’s 6pm kick off at Southampton (admittedly I haven’t really checked so stand down if there has already been a debate). It’s a strange one. Purely tv driven but it’s a working day for goodness sake. Is this match only for people who have taken holiday between Christmas and New Year ?

Im not working and so arent many thousands of others as Saints report match nearly sold out. Doubt a couple hours earlier will make that much difference to away fans. Getting away from St Mary's is much easier than most PL/big grounds and certainly better than the Amex. Ideally situated in the middle of the City. PA fans will be home by 9pm! Anyway thanks for the heads up I may watch this later.

Its a 4 hour drive from Southampton to Plymouth, and the game won’t finish until 8pm

Disagree on this. A later KO would impossible for Plymouth fans to get back by public transport. Yes, they'd have to take the afternoon off to get there but they'd have to for a 7.30 KO. And Southampton fans in the area would be able to get there after work, so wouldn't need to take time off. I'm sure that commuters would have problems but many do take time off in Christmas week. I think it's quite a decent KO time

But for all that, we can't pretend this kick-off time has been set for any other reason than to satisfy TV demands

Yep and I and many wont be happy with that KO but there's a difference here. Had Saints not played 6pm today when would they have played? Boxing Day with no/few trains?

It was said tongue in cheek but I'm sure PA fans live all over the SW and at least they have a chance of making it back the same day.

Yup, on the one hand I can understand the disappointment of those who are unable to attend because they are working but on the other I will be watching the game on tv like a lot of other people. TV demand is just us really.

This doesn't really mean anything though, does it.

We have 'more or less sold out' for every home game left this season, given the number of STH. They could move any one of those home games to 3.00am on a Tuesday night, and still announce that it had 'more or less sold out'.

I suppose it means little unless we know how many STHs they have. I still maintain that it's not a horrendous kick-off time on the last "working" day of the year.

If us, Villa, Liverpool and West Ham all stay in the competitions TV will stagger games 2 early / 2 late. All of us are seeded.

This happened a few years ago on a working Wednesday during Christmas and New Year and a match between Chester City vs Wrexham. The local police thought everybody would have been pissed by 7.45pm so they made it a midday kick-off. Long-term rivals.

Just as not everyone can afford to take the day off with a heavy cold or even flu, it's not a given that's everyone's on holiday at the moment.

You can't please all of the people all of the time. It will be inconvenient for some fans going to the match, yes. OTOH, many workplaces will wind down early on a holiday weekend. I suspect there are also people who are glad it's on early so that kids can go, and will be over early enough to enable adults to still go out for the evening afterwards. And as an armchair occupant, I must admit I felt quite pleased when I checked and found there was a game on early, as well as games starting at 19:45 and one at 20:15.
