Compton.
Not sure he will survive this tour. Needs runs in this innings and attempting to run the skipper out is not ideal...
Root opens in domestic cricket, and was originally thought of as an opener for England.

He was brought in to open, but he has been such a success at 4, I would not move him.
He's effectively opening now anyway, with us usually losing 2 wickets early.
True, but I would still be loathed to move him.
The problem is, looking at the county game, they have played all the next 'cabs off the rank', so not sure where they go next.
I would support picking an opener and sticking with them, BUT Hales just doesn't have the technique for Test cricket. Who else is there?
Lythe?
Sam Robson http://www.skysports.com/cricket/ne...pener-sam-robson-qualifes-to-play-for-England
Robson is technically flawed, not sure he will ever make it in the international game.
Lyth should have been good, but stopped doing all the things that had been a success for him at Yorkshire.
If I wasn't busy at work I'd compile a list of English qualified openers (or 3 or 4) in English cricket.
I think they have all played a test match!!!!
The lead is 381. If there's no further play today and the Boks declare overnight then is this score gettable? If England made it to tea tomorrow with half the runs made and, say, 3 wickets down then England would need 190 off 30 overs. I think that would be worth a dart.
