Is that the best you can do? Someone who doesn't vote Conservative, BNP or UKIP is a 'lefty' - is that what you believe is your considered answer? Surely there's more to your answer than that. Come on, this is a proper debate. I'll ask again - what, to you, is a 'lefty'?

And yes, I'll square with you, you are one of the people I had in mind when I asked this question.
Nope that's my opinion and for somone who spends alot more time on here than me I am royaly chuffed to pieces that I might be part of your silly little "loaded question" thread for you and all your Thatcher Hating sad 40 somthings to gang up like sad old dogs who've had their day  I rue the day when the conservative party are returned and anyone who doesnt like it can do a Jim Davidson and go a live in North Korea:wave:

The terms «famous» and «lefties are both subjective judgments. For this page, «famous» means that someone steeped in American culture will recognize most of these names, and «left-handed» is a loose common classification meaning to write with and/or use the left hand for manual tasks. A few of the people listed here might be better described as «ambidexterous».

Interesting response.

I feel that this is your description of the 'far left'. Read it again, and you could quite easily interpret that as a description of the 'far right' as well. In fact, the 'far left' and the 'far right' have an awful lot in common. As far as I am aware, I don't think there are any 'far left' people on here, and I can only think of one person who is on the 'far right'.

I could be wrong though.

Once again you are correct, you are wrong. Lefties have very little in common with right wingers on any of the major political points. You would find very little common ground betwen the two sides on immigration , taxation , asylum seekers , the merits of imprisonment as a deterant and of course the big one---- capital punishment.Where there is common ground though is how idiots can be recruted to the extremes of either side by newspapers or envy.
I`ll clarify that by pointing out how easy the Mail and other right wing papers influence the ``not so bright`` into thinking that councils like lambeth actually ban the word ``manhole ``or ``other such innocent words from there daily discussions.
Likewise there are lefties who think that Mcdonalds are the greatest evil in the world today and if they can sit up a tree for a few weeks and refrain from washing their dreadlocks for even longer than that then the world will be a better place.

It wasn't a loaded question, it was genuine. I can't help it if you have not formulated a true picture of what you believe your political adversaries to be. You use the phrase 'lefty', I asked you what you mean by it. That's all.

Oh, and 'rue' means 'regret'. Somehow, I don't think you'll be rueing a return to power of a Conservative government. However, I REALLY wish Jim Davidson did go to North Korea. :D

Largely, I agree. But again, you are pointing out the follies on the extreme ends of the political spectrum.

I suspect people who use the term 'lefties' derogatorally on here seem to refer to the unwashed tree-huggers (the kind of people I can't even begin to associate with), but in truth they don't refer to anyone on here.

Spot on. Could you honestly compare someone like the journalist Paul Foot who I personally have a lot of respect for (nailing my colours to the mast here ) with one of the rioters at any of the G8 conferences of the last few years. Both left wingers but both `tarnished` with the term lefties from the right.
For the record I agree with some of the tree huggers sentiments but I can`t get my head round the fact that they never seem to have to go to work, but then maybe I should just accept that conservation actifism is in fact a full time job.
So I admit it I am a leftie.
But I could`nt tell an elm from a larch.

Lefties are people who always know the RIGHT answer to everything. They believe that they do no wrong and it is always the blame of others, c.f. 4x4s. They harbour guilt for things they know little about and happened long ago in the past. They think change for changes sake is a good thing and they always know the best way to change things. They believe that if you repeat something often enough it becomes the truth. They have an irrational phobia concerning people who disagree with their ideas. Lefties hate things that they do not understand and exhibit the same characteristics that they dispise in others when presented with anything they dissaprove of. They are the sort of people who become gaurds at concentration camps or joined the Stasi. The list continues ad infinitum.

Yes, it is a perjorative term because it essentially describes people who have closed minds and do not question the world about them or their understanding of it. They are like the catholic Church in the middle ages.

Great historical examples here!

Mention guards at concentration camp and everyone always assume lefties are involved, don't they?

And the Catholic church of the middle ages was a hotbed of left leaning thought, wasn't it?

This whole definition could have been boiled down to the words 'people who disagree with me'.

I think the term 'leftie' is probably used as a pejorative term for anyone vaguely (or even associated with) the left wing. I don't think it has any true definition.

I think you're barking up the wrong tree here (pun intended) I don't think anyone thinks of tree huggers. I think of lefties now as being well educated, probably at university and having a good job, the civil service and the media seem to be the 'lefties'' favourite occupation.
They feel guilty about their wealth and want to help the under privileged and the minorities, people who weren't as fortunate as them. That gives them the moral highground because helping others must be good, therefore they think they are always right. They have a utopian view of the world, live and let live, peace to all men. They use their government and media jobs to preech their view and try to enforce their values on the rest of us. Anyone who disagrees with them is shouted down as a fascist and a racist. Thatcher is the enemy, but the fact that Thatchers policies have helped create their lifesyle and well paid job only adds to the guilt

Thank you, I am glad that you liked those examples. I don't think you have understood my post, though you have behaved in the manner of a lefty in your response.

Did I say that the medieval catholic church was lefty? Did I say that ALL guards at concentration camps were? But, as you obviously know the answers to everything and can discard all the views that you don't like as wrong, who am I to argue?

And you have proved my point. I disagreed with you and am therefore considered a leftie.

Please go ahead and explain your historical examples. Let's really get down to what you meant by your suggestion that lefties are the kind of people who became concentration camp guards. Prove to me that it wasn't absolute gibberish as I first thought.

Maybe we could create a poll to see if most people agree or disagree with you.

I always though lefty was an anglo-saxon abreviation like tory, Geordie etc and not specifically Derogatory. Some people here are a tad over sensative me thinks, Probably the lefties.

You should think yourselves lucky. As the standard default response to questioning immigration is Racist/Nazi(Hello LI:wave: ) your lucky your not all refered to as commies or Gulag guards.

This topics stuffed full of lefties posting in here.:)

I have not proved any point other than you are incapable of forming a reasoned and logical arguement - and you have really done that yourself.

I said that you responded in the manner of a lefty. I did not say that you were a lefty. If you cannot understand that difference then I think that there is little chance of ever explaining anything to you as you will understand what you want rather than what is said.

With regard to the concentration camp example, I think that you will find that there have been many people who unthinkingly supported a corrupt ideology and found themselves in that position. Ask anyone with Volga German heritage or read some Solzhenitsyn for examples. The catholic church had a very similar attitude to dissent from the accepted orthodoxy.

I notice that you don't like to answer questions, only ask them. Do you have any opinions of your own?

Withering stuff indeed Chip. I'm wounded.

However, I'm simply seeking justification for your incredible assertion that 'lefties':

chip said:

This is a spectacular bit of nonsense. I dare say there have been leftie concentration camp guards. There have also been right-wing ones. Lots of them. There have been German ones and British ones. Fascist ones and Communist ones. Fat ones, thin ones. Tall ones, short ones. What in GOD's name is your point.

You said in your defence:
chip said:

Of course this is true, but I'm afraid it doesn't reduce the dumbness of your original statement.

I shall attempt to define a "leftie" by describing a very good mate of mine. We have known each other for 10 years and worked together for the last 4. He is a totally genuine, lovely guy but in MY opinion a complete nutter, and I tell him so.

So what is a leftie?

(1) Someone who HATES Margaret Thatcher to such an extent that they are almost unable to mention her name without being sick.
(2) Someone who LOVES Ken Livingstone and everything he stands for, particularly the fact that he only travels by public transport and hates the Evening Standard.
(3) Someone who is so politically correct that they agree that "Baa Baa black sheep" may offend ethnic minorities and should be recited as "Baa Baa Green sheep"- This happens in nursery schools in Brighton.
(4) Someone, who, if they had their way, would have us all cycling or using public transport, as the motor car is the work of the devil. Oh, and they particularly hate 4 x 4's
(5) Someone who will go out of their way to eat lunch at an organic veggie cafe to show their disgust at unhealthy"junk food" outlets but will happily end the meal with a roll up.
(6) Someone who will ram their political ideology down your throat but not be prepared to alter their views no matter how structured your argument may be.
(7) Someone who thinks unlimited immigration into the UK enriches our gene pool, and is not harmful to the indigenous population in any way, shape or form
(8) Someone who considers themself intellectual and makes sure that you know it.
(9) Someone who has a loathing of Daily Mail readers without really knowing why, but probably because Ken does.
(10) Someone who is intelligent, generally well meaning, with everyones best interests at heart, but is generally out of touch with the real world (Viscount Stansgate?)

These are my views on the question posed and do not mean that I resent "lefties", as I said, my mate is one. I just find him slightly aggravating and annoying, but then he feels the same way about me!

I find that I feel I have something in common with points 1 and 9 but the rest I happen to disagree with, so perhaps my politics are not left wing then?

I still think you're referring to hippies.

That's a fairly narrow view of people with left-wing views. There are many who do not have the education, financial security or career prospects but do have left of centre political views. Largely, you appear to be referring to white, middle-class people. Also, the people I think you are referring to have a far from Utopian vision of the world. Quite the opposite.

Oh, and Thatcher hated public services, so if they work in the civil service or for the BBC, she certainly wouldn't have created those particular policies which made them financially comfortable.
