Well, yank your string to this, baby: I bought a SANDWICH next to Mark Thatcher in Pret A Manger at Victoria about a year ago. He was a buying coronation chicken and crayfish and rocket sarnies and said not ONE WORD to the serving person throughout the entire transaction. He's very tall and seemed weird in the extreme.

He is weird. I had some dealings with him some years back. Sees himself as some sort of sub-royal. Incredibly clueless about how life functions, in direct contrast to his sister.

I was directly on the horizontal, and a bit to the left of the vertical. Not that far from Suddam Hussein, rather worryingly

Carol's OK though, I always feel a bit sorry for her. Having so many people despise your mother, ffs, and yet to turn out seemingly normal is an achievement in itself.

I'll answer your question when you can tell me why the only reply some people on here (no names yet) give to genuime comment is to criticise the grammar and spelling rather than have the courage to enter into debate! below is a recent reply from a member on a post discussing the Brighton & Hove city council are racist's story in the Argus

" For a start, your kids would need to be literate, and they clearly wouldn't be learning literacy from their Dad. So, I'll correct it for you - free of charge, of course".
OK. I'll answer it for you, and yes, I know you are referring to me in this instance.

If you read many of my replies on topics I feel strongly enough to comment on, you know I rarely duck the subject. Spelling and grammar just happen to be aspects of the argument, which, when I see errors contained within, make me cringe somewhat. Normally, I ignore it. However, I find it difficult to debate with someone on a level playing field when they can't get the basics of the written version of their first language right.

Of course, I do hope you appreciate I was being sarcastic in my reply to your points about ethnic backgrounds and graduate salaries. Was I out of order? Maybe.

Now I have indulged your sidetracked, off-topic whimsy on grammar rather than politics, perhaps you could see your way to answering my original question on what you consider a 'lefty' to be.

Is that the best you can do? Someone who doesn't vote Conservative, BNP or UKIP is a 'lefty' - is that what you believe is your considered answer? Surely there's more to your answer than that. Come on, this is a proper debate. I'll ask again - what, to you, is a 'lefty'?

And yes, I'll square with you, you are one of the people I had in mind when I asked this question.

I might post a proper reply later if I can be arsed. In relation to this message board the word 'leftie' has evolved into a different meaning, and no longer simply represents a general political view. A good example is on this thread, where the main culprits (except for one notable absence) of placing themselves in the 'leftie' bracket are masturbating about being left of Ghandi on a test made up of loaded questions.
Another good example is when the reiculous daily left/right asylum seeker debate happens, no one ever seems to have an opinion of their own, it's always got to be a left/right opinion.

I shall attempt to define a "leftie" by describing a very good mate of mine. We have known each other for 10 years and worked together for the last 4. He is a totally genuine, lovely guy but in MY opinion a complete nutter, and I tell him so.

So what is a leftie?

(1) Someone who HATES Margaret Thatcher to such an extent that they are almost unable to mention her name without being sick.
(2) Someone who LOVES Ken Livingstone and everything he stands for, particularly the fact that he only travels by public transport and hates the Evening Standard.
(3) Someone who is so politically correct that they agree that "Baa Baa black sheep" may offend ethnic minorities and should be recited as "Baa Baa Green sheep"- This happens in nursery schools in Brighton.
(4) Someone, who, if they had their way, would have us all cycling or using public transport, as the motor car is the work of the devil. Oh, and they particularly hate 4 x 4's
(5) Someone who will go out of their way to eat lunch at an organic veggie cafe to show their disgust at unhealthy"junk food" outlets but will happily end the meal with a roll up.
(6) Someone who will ram their political ideology down your throat but not be prepared to alter their views no matter how structured your argument may be.
(7) Someone who thinks unlimited immigration into the UK enriches our gene pool, and is not harmful to the indigenous population in any way, shape or form
(8) Someone who considers themself intellectual and makes sure that you know it.
(9) Someone who has a loathing of Daily Mail readers without really knowing why, but probably because Ken does.
(10) Someone who is intelligent, generally well meaning, with everyones best interests at heart, but is generally out of touch with the real world (Viscount Stansgate?)

These are my views on the question posed and do not mean that I resent "lefties", as I said, my mate is one. I just find him slightly aggravating and annoying, but then he feels the same way about me!

Lefties are people who always know the RIGHT answer to everything. They believe that they do no wrong and it is always the blame of others, c.f. 4x4s. They harbour guilt for things they know little about and happened long ago in the past. They think change for changes sake is a good thing and they always know the best way to change things. They believe that if you repeat something often enough it becomes the truth. They have an irrational phobia concerning people who disagree with their ideas. Lefties hate things that they do not understand and exhibit the same characteristics that they dispise in others when presented with anything they dissaprove of. They are the sort of people who become gaurds at concentration camps or joined the Stasi. The list continues ad infinitum.

Yes, it is a perjorative term because it essentially describes people who have closed minds and do not question the world about them or their understanding of it. They are like the catholic Church in the middle ages.

I'd agree with that summation. I've always thought (5) was particularly ironic.

Blimey, looks like I'm not a leftie after all. For what it's worth, I disagree with 2, 3, 5, 6, 9 and 10. And partially disagree with 4, 7.

1 and 8 are definitely me, though. :lolol: :lolol: :lolol:

Interesting response.

I feel that this is your description of the 'far left'. Read it again, and you could quite easily interpret that as a description of the 'far right' as well. In fact, the 'far left' and the 'far right' have an awful lot in common. As far as I am aware, I don't think there are any 'far left' people on here, and I can only think of one person who is on the 'far right'.

I could be wrong though.
