In response to the poster hoping Bent does well today, please remember it is Japan they're playing. Hardly an equal measure to World Cup 2nd round onwards opponents. Capello will know this and even if Bent got a hat trick I don't think it'll change his mind. He knows already if Bent is going or not

If he already knows then why is Bent starting? What's the point? Capello doesn't strike me as a manager who does something for no reason. I think it's Bent or Heskey and Bent's performance with Rooney will decide it.

To try out plan c or plan d and see if it works and if so, if it means bent should come along or if he isn't good enough at plan C and we already have crouch/defoe for plan b, why bother with him, if he excels in plan c maybe tke him. It's a last chance for some of the players to show capello they offer something to the squad for alternative plans.

I see your point, but Capello isn't stupid enough to base a performance against the International equivilent of a non league team as his sole choice for taking someone to the World Cup.

If it is solely down to how Bent performs with Rooney then he's got little chance of going

So Marshy still want Bent? At least Heskey puts it about. Bent may as well not have been on the pitch.

Heskey has to go, brings the best out of Rooney. Would always start with Heskey over Crouch as well when Crouch plays the way the whole team plays changes but with Heskey it allows Rooney to do his stuff. Think we might see a surprise with Rooney up top and either Gerrard or Cole behind him

It was grim i will give you that, but England were woeful in the first half and that wasnt down to Bent.

However it was good to see Heskey get 15 mins and miss another absolute sitter and lose possesion every time he got near it.

It seems to me Heskey will go, Im hoping now that at least if we go with 2 up top its Crouch or Defoe that starts.

I was really dissapointed he did not continue with Joe Cole in behind Rooney as i thought Cole changed the game for us 2nd half.

Id really like to see Gerrard in that position however with Barry and Lampard Central, Joe Cole could play on the left and team up with A.Cole as they have a good club understanding.

Lennon has to start on the right Walcott is an impact player last 20 of a game maybe.

oh Well we will see in a few weeks.

Come On ENGLAND !

Marshy - you've forgotten Heskey - take it it's just a blip on ur part - ya know Heskey the one who performed consistantly in qualifying and is the perfect foil for Rooney - ya know Heskey who should / will prob start the first match...

I agree with everything you say from the fourth paragraph down.

Heskey is a good squad player, whether you like him or not. Crouch is not a target man so Heskey is the only player we have in that mould.

I would like to see Gerrard in a free role behind Rooney, Lennon on the right, Barry and Lampard in the centre, and either Johnson, Milner or Joe Cole on the left.

If that formation proves to be a flop then I would revert to 4-4-2 and have Heskey up top with Rooney.

Anyone still want Bent to go to S.Africa?

His performance actually reminded me of the dark days of Graham Taylor.

Although he wasn't great, and I don't think he'll go to SA, I did feel a little sorry for him as the service he received was woeful.

that list on the OP is probably about spot on. but Dawson isnt going, Upson by default will get the nod, and i'd take SWP rather than Walcott (who did f*** all today).

King can cover the defensive midfield hole if need be, or Milner under instruction (wont get frustrated, unlike Gerrard). We looked pretty usfull in the 4-5-1 with Cole (or use Gerrard) in the hole.

absolutely Sheebo. Lets pick Heskey and guarantee we go out on pens in the quater finals again.

we wont win f*** all with him in our starting 11

Its crying out for Gerrard behind Rooney. We will get away with Heskey/Crouch in the groups but as soon as wehit a hlf decent side were screwed with that line up

You must have missed all 8 qualifying games (or possibly 10) where we son all bar 1 which didnt matter cos we'd alread qualified. If you'd take Bent over Heskey you're a fool. Yes i can understand you not wanting Heskey to start (im quite on the fence as crouch and defoe are pushing for a start)

We wouldn't be there if we didn't qualify mate. It's your opinion but i think he offers so much more than Bent and helps Rooney a lot
