So out of interest assuming Barry can't start the first game who plays the more defensive midfield role? I am not a huge fan of Carrick but we lack cover for Barry if he doesn't go.

I also assume you will be telling our best striker why the player he links up with best as a strike partner is not in the squad.

Personally, from that squad, I would take Upson, Carrick and Heskey and leave out Dawson, Bent and one of Joe Cole or Adam Johnson (not sure which one but probably would pick Cole due to his experience of major tournaments).

If Barry isnt fit i would take Carrick, but all reports this morning suggest he will be fit to play.

Why on earth would you take Bent over Heskey?

Bent is purely rubbish, granted Heskey does not score enough goals, but he does cause defences problems and Rooney has played some of his best games for England alongside Heskey.

Agreed, ask any England goalscorer who is their preferred partner and they'd say Heskey...

And in the Carrick/Barry debate the answer is simple, Carrick is GASH, Barry isn't.

Not only is Heskey rubbish, he has has hardly kicked a ball for 6 months, however Bent has smashed in 25 prem goals in a poor side.

I really hope Bent does the business today, if he scores and has a good hour today i really think Fabio will leave Heskey out.

He may well be fit but you need cover for every position. In your squad there is no cover for Barry, who has just had an injury and needs the cover most. As for wingers, I would say that Lennon, Walcott, Milner, Gerrard (who has played wide for England) and either Cole or Johnson is plenty of options.

Carrick has been disappointing every time he has played for England.

Would not take Dawson, whilst there is a not a lot to call between Dawson and Upson, he will stick with Upson as he has been his back up in the qualifiers.

Bent has had his chances, he offers no movement and does not look like scoring.

Heskey at least occupies defenders and gives Rooney some space.

Bent is not good enough for International football, whereas Heskey has been picked consistently by a number of managers. The main thing is he works best with Rooney. Football is a team game and it is about the 11 players that work best together, not the best 11 players that you have. Heskey works well with Rooney and even if he doesn't start matches, he should at the very least travel. Clearly you have some vendetta against Heskey but I am sure Capello will pick him.

From watching Motd, the highlights they show, and matches on sundays/monday evenings etc etc, Upson should be nowhere near that plane. I know 4 season ticket holders at Upton Park, all of whom agree, and believe that a number of the goals they conceded were to do with an Upson mistake. Thats backed up by watching West Ham as well, hes shite.

I pretty much agree with the orginal squad posted.

I agree that Carrick isn't that great but I would still take some cover for Barry as a more defensive midfielder and he is a better option in my view than Huddlestone or Parker. I would play Barry ahead of Carrick every time, I was not arguing Carrick should start.

And your point is? Cannot really reply if you cannot post some text.

Darren Bent has averaged a goal every 2 games over his entire career
He's scored 25 goals in 40 appearances for Sunderland this season

Yes, there are question marks about making the step up to international level, but to call him "purely rubbish" is just absolutely ridiculous. :shootself

The problem is Carrick is not really a holding midfielder.

Barry, Hargreaves and Parker are, but Hargreaves has played 1 minute of football in about 18 months and Parker has hardly played for England is the last 3 years, so Carrick ends only going by default.

At international level he is rubbish and at club level he tends to start well early season and then go off the boil.

He should not be near the England squad, but Owen and Zamora are both injured and then we start to run out of forwards. Also the Villa one with the long name has been poor in recent months so is out as well.

I do not see Bent going, he will take Walcott as right side / up front cover.

How can you say he is rubbish at international level, he had about 60 minutes in one game against Brazil. He deserves a chance, you simply cannot ignore than record.
