You could apply that logic to anything. Then nothing would change, ever!

Not really - I find your attitude selfish....

If i didn't want smoke in my clothes/face I'd go to one of a few other places in Shoreham where I can drink without it?? Thats being tolerant of other peoples choices - you are assuming that everyone wants the change?

Smoking causes cancer and death.

I want to go to the pub and enjoy myself without getting cancer.

It's not about being tolerant, it's about health risks.

I haven't even made up my mind as to which side of the argument I fall on.

However, I'm not convinced by arguments that are essentially "it's always been that way so we shouldn't change".

Landlords can turn their pubs into no smoking venues if they like but the vast majority choose not to. That must say something.
Also alcohol can cause death and cancer too. Should we ban that?

It can cause death to yourself.

I've never heard of anyone dying from someone else drinking.

So why are pubs shut before big matches or kick off times moved to earlier in the day?

The problem is TWATS drinking alcolhol though. Most people I know can get throughly drunk and be of no harm to anyone.

The answer is to ban TWATS from the world :)

again youre assuming that everyone wants to remove the health risks, and also assuming that you have the right to demand that a private pub not owned by you changes its policy re allowing people in (ie non smokers) ..... I agree with you but my way of dealing with it is to go somewhere else - not attempt to change an institution thats been around since before our grandparents...

If I made my local pub become smoke free - then about 5 or 6 old veterans (one who flew spitfires) would have no where to go - they all smoke pipes and are around 80ish (to hazard a guess) and they would probably sit at home and waste away...shame really jsut because they chose to smoke...

The bottom line is that common sense must prevail. I believe the decision should lay at the feet of the landlord. Then the people, not the government, can decide which pub to drink in.

I am uncomfortable with this increasingly nanny state we seem to be developing.

Next we'll all be micro-chipped so the government knows exactly where we are, what substances we take, our bowel movements etc. etc.

I'm not so sure - but I'm not willing to take away some peoples choice to do what they want however bad that choice may be - I believe that is dictating what people can and can't do - I chose to deal with it by not going there if I don't want my health to suffer...

Completely agree - exactly what I was attempting (obviously poorly) to say....
