ah but this is NSC's post ironic inverse snobbery you've walked in to. Anything that may be popular or perceived by the wider public or critics to be quite good or more will get the NSC knock you off the pedestal treatment.

Or .. perhaps differant folks like differant entertainment. While some are content to be spoonfed entertainment some like to look a bit further for their entertainment. A lot of folks that liked Slumdog Millionaire did so because it was the acceptable face of "foreign films" and it made them feel very hip to the groove.

Oldboy. Do it. Ultimate film.

I've tried to watch that a couple of times and always been called away for something. Would like to see it to the end. I hear a Hollywood remake is due :(

It was alright. I don't go along with the slagging, and I don't understand the hype either. Overall it was just pretty average, can't see me watching it again.

You've got to wonder and the critic who said it was 'the feel good film of the year'.

Personally I don't find, prostitution, murder, torture, social deprivation, drug addiction, and exploitation all that up lifting, but each to there own, I guess.

But surely you are forgetting that fabulous joyous indian DANCE-OFF right at the end, when the credits are rolling. If that doesn't make you feel good, then....

...well actually, you're pretty normal.

The Fatherland
[narrating] "I wish I could tell you that Andy fought the good fight, and the Sisters let him be. I wish I could tell you that - but prison is no fairy-tale world. He never said who did it, but we all knew. Things went on like that for awhile - prison life consists of routine, and then more routine. Every so often, Andy would show up with fresh bruises. The Sisters kept at him - sometimes he was able to fight 'em off, sometimes not. And that's how it went for Andy - that was his routine."

Ah brutal prison rape, that fun old thing.

mmmm, I see your point. Alright then, ignoring all the horrible bits it's fun.

I got through the first six hours a few years back then had to go out and missed the ending (which having heard about it since I'm not too fussed that I missed). The stand out thing for me was him eating a live octopus - quite amazing - moving tentacles hanging out of his mouth!

6 hours? Eh?

Shame you didn't see it all at once, as the ending is rather spoiled by hearing it elsewhere rather than watching it all in one. Let's not spoil it for Nibble.

Yeah that bit is grim.

I presume Mark Kermode fits into that group then - it's one of his films of the year. I really think that you're trying a bit too hard here to be the connoisseur and it is coming about as inverse snobbery.

Having been to Goa (India for beginners admittedly) a couple of times we looked forward to seeing the film and saw it at the Cinema. It was decent enough. It seemed to give a fairly accurate portrayal of life in India, warts and all. Ok the storyline is a bit naff but it is superbly filmed.

In terms of the warts bit, perhaps it made some on this board a bit uncomfortable and therefore felt the need to switch off? ???
