Prepare to be underwhelmed, fellas... MASSIVELY over-hyped and overrated.

Totally agree, over-hyped to the extent that people almost believed it was a half decent film....even after having watched it. You've only got to read eastlondonseagull's utterly delusional post above to see how effective this 'hype brainwashing' can be!

Ha ha! On the contrary, I genuinely LOVE it. I AM usually the one that hates over-hyped films, such as that mawkish bag of utter SHITE, the Shawshank Redemption.

Maybe it is over-hyped but I saw it when it first came out and there wasnt much, if any hype, at the time. I thought it was a great film then and I still do.

I do wonder if people who dislike it so much are being swayed by the hype, albeit in a reverse manner.

f***ing hell, it isn't *that* bad FFS.

ah but this is NSC's post ironic inverse snobbery you've walked in to. Anything that may be popular or perceived by the wider public or critics to be quite good or more will get the NSC knock you off the pedestal treatment.

I'm all for individual thinkers and people not being sheep but the levels on here at times are quite fun to see.

Mind you, if we're talking about overhyped films then what about The BlairWitch Project. Probably great when viewed as a 15kUSD film but certainly not worth the hype it received

All I can say is that I came out of the cinema utterly underwhelmed and slightly mystified by the hype around it. You get fantastic films like 'Let The Right One In' from last year and yet they get totally overlooked by the public because the Hollywood marketing machine isn't behind them.

Everyone did the same with Avatar, slagging off the "story". What do you expect from a 12 rated film, snuff porn?

You've got to wonder and the critic who said it was 'the feel good film of the year'.

Personally I don't find, prostitution, murder, torture, social deprivation, drug addiction, and exploitation all that up lifting, but each to there own, I guess.

I really enjoyed it, but I did see it on a pirate copy, just before release and long before the hype.

It's got its flaws but its a f***ing great, and fun, film.

[narrating] "I wish I could tell you that Andy fought the good fight, and the Sisters let him be. I wish I could tell you that - but prison is no fairy-tale world. He never said who did it, but we all knew. Things went on like that for awhile - prison life consists of routine, and then more routine. Every so often, Andy would show up with fresh bruises. The Sisters kept at him - sometimes he was able to fight 'em off, sometimes not. And that's how it went for Andy - that was his routine."

Ah brutal prison rape, that fun old thing.
