Slow internet

Not too shabby. I've got 60mb so it's capped on my laptop due to the wireless card being ancient.

My internet is very slow and talking to a chap in a bar last night he sad that by returning it to factory settings would not remedy it as those settings are what the PC makers think you want and contain a lot of rubbish that you don't need He said the only way is to completly reformat the hard drive in which case I would lose windows of which I do not have a copy but he said that if I have the copy installations cds (6 of them) 1 will contain windows,

Is this true and if so how do I find out which cd it is and can I just install that disc without the other 5..

Who is your provider, the reason i ask is we were with Talk Talk i think , the service was fine untill the initial contract ran out,it then got progressively slower over a couple of months.When i called them they told me i could only improve it by renewing the home hub and that to do this we would have to renew our contract at double the price, robbing barstads.We changed to BT service again fine untill contract expired ,then slightly different problem started we could periodicaly not get online at all.When i called them i was told renew contract this time at 50 % increase so told them to terminate the contract and that i would go else where that was 6 months ago service has been fine since.

Changed the channel on my router so was not sharing the same as the others in my street and mine sped up considerably

Not that great, but even at that speed Youtube should run without buffering. so that's probably ok.
These guys with double figure download have Virgin, which is fibre to the home. Which is the future at some point for BT.

If your internet is slow, could be a number of reasons.

Have you emptied your cookies and the like? Sometimes too many can cause a few problems
Who's your provider? Does their website have a status check for your area? If so, check it. There maybe a problem with congestion (internet will slow down at peak times, which can include all weekend and 7pm-10pm weekday (varies in areas))
I don't mean to sound like a dick in this, is it connected via Ethernet cable or wireless. If cable, make sure it hasn't been nudged, and is sitting in the ports correctly. For wireless, make sure your router isn't being obstructed by dense metal objects, and that you're fairly close to it. Try moving the router to the most centre part of your house you possibly can.

Internet explorer - ensure "no add ons box is checked" - this ensures add ons like active x are disabled

The chap in the pub said that was probably the cause of it taking ages to load any internet site. Probably the hard drive is full of rubbish that I do not need was how he described it. I noticed that on amazon windows xp can be bought for £35, which is ok, but is only available to pc builders.

OK, i was going to say your chap in the pub was either talking out his arse or winding you up, but this does make sence - though i dont know why he's told you reinstall. little knowledge being dangerous and all that.

firstly establish if its your internet or computer thats slow. i see you've done that with the speednet test, and its fine. so its probably your computer is slow. this is most like down to two or three things - too much shit installed around your browser (plugins, tool bars etc), disk fragmentation and too much stuff on your harddrive, though this is unlikley with harddrive sizes.

for the first uninstall anything you dont use or dont need. my parents had 3 tool bars on their IE and it ran like molasses. AVG, Google, Norton, Yahoo and others will try to get you to install a little tool bar and it serves little purpose - at least stick to only one. goto Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add/remove programs. find the offending tool bar and uninstall. while you are there, remove anything else that you know you havent used ( it will tell you when used) but be wary of anything that looks techie named as it might be a driver. one thing to remove and reinstall later is Adobe Reader as it clogs up with loads of updates.

next clear up the browser you use. if its firefox, go to tools, clear recent history. if its IE, goto tools, Internet options, select Delete files in the Temporary Internet Files bit. newer might be different and there are other ways, but however you find this, dont delete cookies and passwords as thats a pain to remember. getting rid of the files (and clear history too) should suffice.

now defrag. open My Computer, right click on C:, select properties, then tools and Defrag now. start the defrag and ignore the back up warning (or backup to a USB anything you are wanting to be sure about). now go and put the kettle on, do some gardening and pop down the pub for a sunday roast as it will probably take hours.

If you are low on disk space, then you might want to buy a USB drive and transfer old/archiveable stuff (pictures, movies etc). deleting unused application and reinstalling some apps (especially anti-virus) can salvage lots of space if you feel brave. beyond that i would get someone who knows what their are doing - certainly dont start reinstalling if you are unsure even what disks to use. it is simple enough, but if your low on space of have a disk full of shit, you wont see much change unless you reformat, and you lose your data. Buy a usb drive for transfering all data if you do procede down this path.

either way, you will probably want to buy a cheap usb drive first to keep any data you would want to lose.

it tells you the time it takes for a special test message to go to the destination and back. nothing more. its supposed to simply note that a service is available or indicate where in the network path a bottleneck might be. many services deliberatly ignore them (for security) or routers might de-prioritise them, so they are not accurate measures of speed.

Also, in any PC that needs a bit of tidying up, I generally do the following:

a) Install and run CCleaner (disk space & registry) - Redirecting...
b) Uninstall bloated anti-virus stuff like McAfee or Norton.
c) Install AVG free edition - AVG Free at Download.com
d) If you're worried about naughty spyware & stuffs, download Spybot S&D & run scan and immunisation - The home of Spybot-SD!
e) Don't reinstall Windows unless you're confident with what you're doing.
