My internet is very slow and talking to a chap in a bar last night he sad that by returning it to factory settings would not remedy it as those settings are what the PC makers think you want and contain a lot of rubbish that you don't need He said the only way is to completly reformat the hard drive in which case I would lose windows of which I do not have a copy but he said that if I have the copy installations cds (6 of them) 1 will contain windows,

Is this true and if so how do I find out which cd it is and can I just install that disc without the other 5..

Reinstalling windows sounds a bit extreme just because of slow internet. How do you know its the PC and not the line/router? Is the PC generally slow aswell? Lots of things it could or could not be ! Spyware, line issues etc

Do a speed test before you do anything else.

The chap in the pub said that was probably the cause of it taking ages to load any internet site. Probably the hard drive is full of rubbish that I do not need was how he described it. I noticed that on amazon windows xp can be bought for £35, which is ok, but is only available to pc builders.

I think you mean internet explorer takes a long time to load, and he's right its most likely because you have a load of shit installed on it from the manufacturer but reinstalling windows is a bit drastic because anyone semi competent with computers could clear some of that up.

Have you got a friend or someone that can come round with a laptop and test your Internet? Seriously it may not be the PC at all and i would recommend getting some professional PC help before reloading windows !

Do the speed test. Then you eliminate that bit. Are you using internet explorer? I hope you don't use AOL. Both of these appear to use valves in their system.
If you have anything above say 4mb speed, are using Chrome or Firefox with XP, Vista or Windows 7, it's none of those.
Next defrag your system, Vista does it automatically, but you can do it manually. Next get a free registry fix program and let it fix the broken registry thingys.
I have a Toshiba with Vista. The system is stored on the second drive, the hard copy for the whole thing takes up less than 2 discs.

Imagine it's water coming out of a tap. Low number equals slow flow faster is better.

I would recommend AGAINST re-installing Windows as what usually happens when people are told to do it they don't back everything up and then they lose pictures / documents.

Get someone with a laptop round to use your internet connection and go from there.
