As I said to Lord B. I think there is an explanation in the Sussex Place Names book. It seems to be a matter of opinion. East Hoathly is definitely more often pronounced -lee. In Surrey and Kent, there are two places spelt Leigh. The Surrey one is pronounced Lee, the Kent one Lye. Gillingham in Kent is pronounced Jillingham, the Gillingham in Dorset with the hard G, unless Dorset Seagull tells us otherwise.
