This stupid legend business again. Slade is paid to do a job, which up to now he's done well. He appears to be an astute manager of both players and tactics. He can see that the likes of Loft etc are not for one, going to achieve Championship status and two, play in it. If this club is to progress everyone has to realise the vast majority of players that have played at this club for a number of years have been very mediocre. When we were in the Championship before we had to rely on loan signing to keep us there. Again to progress we need to be looking for a small but talented squad, perhaps looking for the odd loan signing but from the Premiership clubs. Getting rid of very average players and those that shouldn't have been here anyway, like Mayo, is only a good thing. People must be mad if they believe the likes Sullivan will ever make a Championship Keeper. His level is L2/Conference at best.

Slade stated that the there's a lot of business to do to get this club into a position to go forwards. The fact that in one swoop he has removed this charity status we appear to have towards old players (Mayo) is a major step in the right direction., we have saddled ourselves with too much dead wood for too long. I hope he keeps up the good work. As far legend though get a grip!

Bollocks is this question valid.
Loft did well as a squad player, but that's it, would've much rather kept hold of Tommy Fraser who showed some real passion and promise, but apparently he's surplus to requirements, so he's been released.
Hinshelwood is always injured as we all know and we obviously have a top-class keeper in mind for next season.

IN RUSSELL WE TRUST!

Well said Whingy! In fact, I think that we would make quite a good song for our shiney-headed overlord - to the tune of Tom Hark:

In Russell we trust
In Russell we trust
In Russell we trust

Russell is amazing. This is exactly what we've needed for a couple of years. No sentimentality, no unearned loyalty, no contracts for the boys. The question is are the players in question good enough to get us near the top end of this league, and the answer in the case of EVERY player released today is a resounding no. And there are a few of us who've been pointing that out for months and taking a lot of stick for it. But today is the day we're proved right, and next season when Russell has us in play-off contention it'll be totally justified.

Exactly right, we need to get rid of the dead wood, and not just have them because they are 'local lads', or 'try hard', so although releasing 17 players leaves up with a small squad I have faith in Russell to get in some new players and move us forward.

Shame about Sullivan going as I felt he was going to be our number 1 soon. But I'm sure Russell will put it right. The rest I'm not bothered about.

This squad just avoided relegation. Slade had to make changes, lets hope what he gets in is better than what he let go.

Don't have any problem with improving the team, which in turn obviously improves the squad, but I honestly find it hard to see how the squad as a whole will be improved by releasing the likes of Loft and Hinshelwood. How are we supposed to sign all the new team players we need as well as back ups to them who are willing to sit on the bench. I'm cynical of the fact that any player we sign as back is going to be better than the likes of Hinsh or Loft.

Brighton factually.....
My love for Russell Slade has taken a slight hit today, if I'm honest. He did a brilliant job in keeping us up, only he would have done it. I love him for what he's done. But I do worry how many players he thinks he can sign this summer, losing Hinshelwood, Sullivan and Loft amazes me in my opinion, absolutely amazes me. Hinshelwood is SO much better than El-Abd, it infuriates me in a way. It's a real shame, and for the first time I'm starting to doubt his long term suitability.

Im not worried Ninja.......think about it there are shit loads of teams off loading shit loads of players, and the players released contributed to our poor form and have to take a share of the blame. We may sometimes look at our own players, and think they are better than they really are !! dont ya think...!

It will make the summer go faster anyway :yahoo:

Lets face the nearly all players have be totally unprofessional for 75% of the season and the ones released were never going to be good enough for a 'championship' side we have to be looking at building now, the ones retained can think themselves lucky, as hopefully this club will now/soon be one players will WANT to play for rather than coming to to have a good time by the sea. Power to Russell Slade for seeing it like it is and unloading the dead wood (we'll see which other clubs think they are good professional players now!)

The point is most people aren't claiming that the likes of Fraser or Loft are good enough for a first team near the top of the league, but I think some people are being a little naive in either thinking we'll be able to sign and maintain a squad of players good enough to play at the top of the league week in week out or that we will be able to sign back up better than what we had.

The comment about signing players who want to play for us is complete bollocks. The players most people are annoyed about leaving are all local lads, several of whom proved at the end of the season that they are as passionate about this club as we are. Haven't you seen the evidence this season that signing countless new players is in fact the opposite of what you want if they come to Brighton and don't care much about the club.
