But I think we're all in agreement on the key points:

He's seriously ill with COPD
He bunked off
He shouldn't be smoking
Lots of people with COPD do smoke anyway and it's hard to stop
He got caught bang to rights
Bit stupid of him getting caught
He got very lucky when the company nadged up the dismissal

Not sure about the hassle for his work colleagues picking up his slack though - someone else is getting paid for his shift if he's not.

Love from a proud work shirker who has bunked off down the pub on more than a couple of occasions (but not a malingerer! :lolol:)

Just two points,

2. Someone else is being paid for his shift? Is that what happens, someone calls in sick so they get the locum in to cover, nah in reality some poor sod has to cover his shit as well as their own [emoji23]

I was once involved with sacking someone who had called in sick and had then been spotted watching Palace at Selhurst Park. (Of course this is a sacking offence on its own) And yes, he did put that ridiculous "I'm ill" voice when he called in sick so I had even less sympathy.

People can have underlying health conditions, which their employers know can cause illness which fluctuates. Sometimes they’re classed as ambulant disabled and this is taken into account when they’re employed.

Other healthy people who are as fit as fiddles think that people who have variable health conditions are skiving if they can’t manage five days a week for 48 weeks of the year.

Edit to add, I remember a boss back in the 70s boasting to all and sundry, he’d never had a day off sick in his working life (over 20 years at that point).
Less than a month later, he was laid out with a very painful slipped disc.

So this herbert calls in sick, then later that day gets clocked by a duty manager drinking outside a social club, claimed he was in bed ill all day but "only went down there for 15 minutes", gets the tin tack - but then wins his claim for unfair dismissal because there's nothing in his contract that states he can't go out pubbing when he's called in sick. AND he's in line to receive compensation from his previous employers.

Stop the planet please. I want to get off.

I have no sympathy for the fella, but this one better explains why the dismissal failed.

Blimey, you had some neck going out on a jolly back then, then.:eek: I have always been clearly on the side of the company.
Again I will bring it back to morals, mine wouldn't let me go out on a jolly if I was being paid for work and doing nothing.

I had a boil on the crack of my arse once that was so large and painful I couldn't even sit down, let alone drive in to work. Didn't need to put a 'calling in sick' voice for that, but Fiona in HR thanked me for providing such a detailed account.

Turned out to be an ingrowing hair follicle. I wouldn't recommend it.

Sounds a right pain in the ass

My supervisor and his boss were quite happy with my morals. It was a health condition not a prison sentence.

Not possible, especially part time workers work far longer hours for what they are paid for. All to satisfy the shareholders dont ya know.

Years ago a lady in our office got signed off for 2 months with 'depression' stating she struggled to get out the house, then went on a 6 week round the world tour with her husband. We all saw the snaps she stupidly put on Facebook but the company I worked for back then didn't take any action. Pretty sure the management must have been aware but it seems some of these 'unfair dismissal' cases can be more costly than they're worth to the employers.

On full sick pay too.

I think you had many good year's where you guys had some great benefits, like ample overtime and short days on full pay.
