A tricky situation, that clearly called for a 0-0 home draw with Wigan to calm things down.

THANKS For Staying Seated

Posted on: Sat 21 Feb 2009

Consider your fellow fan behind you. That's the message of a new campaign being launched at Molineux ahead of the visit of Cardiff City.

Wolves are acting after being inundated with letters and emails from supporters regarding the problem of persistent standing during games. Those worst affected are younger supporters and the elderly. These groups of fans in particular, who struggle to stay standing for long periods, are simply unable to see the game if supporters in front of them do not remain seated.

Ten thousand fliers will be distributed at the Cardiff and Plymouth games depicting a child whose view is being obscured by fans standing in front of him and posters are going on display in the stands. Adverts are being placed in the match day programmes and regular PA announcements will also be made inside the stadium to re-enforce the 'please remain seated' message.

As part of the campaign a new 'Wolves Code' has been drawn up, based on supporters' feedback called 'Love Wolves - Respect other fans'. The code is in the form of the acronym 'THANKS'.

THANKS

Molineux Stadium Safety Manager, Steve Sutton, commented: "I hope that this 'anti-standing' campaign, using strong imagery of youngsters unable to see the game, will help to highlight the impact that persistent standing can have on fellow supporters.

"We've received many letters from supporters on the issue and this campaign is ultimately at the request of the fans themselves."

Persistent standing during the match is a breach of ground regulations in every all-seated stadium around the country. The rule was brought in as one of the responses to the Hillsborough disaster. The new drive at Molineux is aimed at making supporters aware of the regulations but also encouraging them to think about how their actions could affect the match day experience of others nearby.

If they had unreserved seating there wouldn't be a problem - it always sorts itself out at away matches. The thing from Middlesborough about making too much noise from the back of the stand is absolutely unbelievable - f***ing daytrippers turning up for one Premiership game then complaining because some rough boys were being too noisy. Football really is going down the shitter isn't it?:nono:

Yeah, yeah, it all sounds a bit OTT...but imagine if you were sat behind this bloke, having paid for a season ticket, and he spends the majority of the game stood up...thus obscuring your view completely (perhaps not a bad thing with the way Boro play at times), how would you feel?

...lights blue touchpaper and retreats to a safe distance!

It's pretty fair, until the last paragraph - then it just loses all credibility. If people didn't want noise then they should go to the theatre, or Withdean!

I have to agree with the sitting down rule, my wife is only 5 foot tall and even when a youngster stands up she cant see a thing.

Go back a few seasons when we played West Ham in a championship game, we won 1...0, because everyone was standing up, and the away fans section is not the best at West Ham anyway, but we ended up watching the whole of the second half under the stand watching the TV screens as she just could not see a thing, sad thing was is there were quite a few others having to do the same as us.

At most away games we do try and sit to the side a bit so if others want to stand they wont get in her way, but you still get the odd selfish idiot that wants to block her view, I must be honest i have had a few rows over this.

Agree with you, but if that was the case at a ground with so many empty seats like borough do im pretty sure if your view was obscured then you could move a few seats either side. I know people are going to just say oh well he has paid for a ticket so shouldnt have to move and so on, but surely people know which areas of a ground are likely to stand and which will sit. Its like withdean, if you sit in H block, you know most people are likely to stand, whereas if you want to sit you will buy your ticket somewhere else.
Bring back terraces!!!

Yay! I was actually right for once (although not a club we actually care about)!

My source was somebody who works on the turnstiles...

...unfortunately I have no such source on the Withdean turnstiles, who knows about the new manager.
