I can tell you now with the upmost confidence that policing will not save a penny via centralised procurement, in fact quite the opposite. This is a nice soundbite, but literally has no chance of succeeding. If they want to make savings the changes need to go much deeper.

A friend of mine in the Met was telling me that it is cheaper to get pens (yes, stationary) from Ryman and expense it, than through the Police procurement system.

It's 50/50 whether this has or will work. It is odd because she is so far to the right of the Tories that it feels like she should join reform. The story is now 7th on the BBC site, 7th on the Sky News site, I can't find it on the Daily Mail site and it's 5th on the Times site. Those articles are now of her apologising and unless a member of the Labour Party breaks rank then it will fade away.
I am not particularly comfortable with it but he's trying to win power and he knows he needs to turn some con voters to Labour to do so. It probably helps that. It's risky for sure and perhaps doesn't help with a clear narrative of who he or the party are right now but it will be forgotten in Nov at the election when they probably win that seat anyway.

Sir Keir Starmer to make a speech in Dover today, finally outlining how he will combat the small boats immigration problem.

Source : The Times

The Labour leader will use a speech in Dover to unveil plans for a new Border Security Command that will incorporate intelligence agents, border officers, police, specialist investigators and prosecutors who will be tasked with targeting criminal gangs that facilitate illegal migration to the UK. Labour will also expand the counter-terror powers available to target people-smuggling gangs.

That's it. £75m, a couple of extra coppers and job done.

Fabulous news.

Why didn't anyone else think of this?

I suppose the big difference here is that they are targeting the trafficking gangs and not the victims.

Combine that with an efficient asylum processing system and anybody could reduce the asylum issue substantially within a year.

I’m not saying Labours’ approach will succeed but thus far this government has deliberately kept crossings and the asylum backlog artificially high in order to trigger right wingers into thinking asylum seekers are the enemy.

Any new government that stops that policy and actively tries to solve the issue will already be miles ahead of the Tory’s.

It will be interesting to hear what he has to say about this new body collaborating with the French equivalents. Sunak, and Tory arrogance, has pretty much failed in this area.

It’s a different approach, one can only assume the Tory party didn’t think of this as they have a very different agenda?

sounds a lot like the current policy towards the boat crossing, with more money and counter-terrorism thrown in. current gov keep announcing money and collaboration with French, doesn't address the underlying problems. why will this version make a difference?

Unless there's some cross working with the French authorities targeting the gangs seems a bit pointless.

Also do France really want to stop the gangs themselves.

Alternatively, allow asylum seekers to claim asylum from abroad like we always used to before this Government stopped it. in 2018 there were 299 people crossing the channel and prior to that the numbers weren't even recorded as they were so minimal.

It's simple, just get rid of the People Smugglers industry by providing a safe alternative, then it doesn't matter what any other country does

These numbers crossing and backlogs haven't grown by accident or through incompetence. It is deliberate politicking to appeal to the extremely naive.

The only way to solve this is by working very closely with our European allies.

I believe the French do want to resolve this issue. I also believe it must have been difficult/almost impossible working with the current government on this.

What would you say are the underlying problems?

They do. They have proposed 3 or 4 collaborative initiatives. All turned down point blank by the Tory’s who then also tried to blame the French for the issues. Understandably causing the French to give up and let the boats leave for our shores.

I guess they thought “if you won’t help solve the problem, you can have the problem”

Or

“Si vous n’aidez pas à résoudre le problème, vous pouvez avoir le probleme ”.

As they might say?

President Macron offered Theresa May an asylum processing centre in France, which she turned down flat. Prior to Brexit we could return any boat or lorry refugees to France under the Dublin Agreement.

This was done deliberately by the Conservatives so they could blame a lot of the country’s ills on ‘illegals’ which lie has been repeated and reported so often many people believe it. Goering would be proud.

That's just hot air. Like saying you're going to tackle drugs by stopping the smugglers. It ain't gonna happen. Take down one gang, another will appear.

Whilst its correct the gang leaders should be targeted, it is also important to ensure genuine assylum seekers are processed quickly and safely and non genuine removed. Both need to happen.

There is no doubt in my mind the assylum system whilst totally neccessary is also partially abused and that has resulted in economic migrants taking desperate risks in the hands of criminal gangs in amongst the genuine.

They should certainly make it easier for people to claim assylum outside the UK without the crazy risk to life, that would enable the genuine to apply without risking death.

Yep shit healthcare, shit transport, shit pollution, shit prospects for the young and everywhere politicians and their cronies have their snouts in the trough...

Look everyone there's an immigrant!

It won't be solved, but it does need to be managed along with a whole host of things the Tories have spectacularly failed to manage.

you mean the French? they can only do so much really, constrained by their laws. they've torn down the camps repeatedly, hasn't stopped the flow. they could say the problem is at the Italian border, nowt can do about that. and everyone ignores the same issue faced in the Med.

if you mean our border force, they are even more constrained by not being in France. literally nothing they can do but scoop them up.

if you mean the politicians, they are kicking the ball around without any real attempt at scoring a solution, avoiding the obvious one to accept and process claims abroad.
