You pompous self righteous people

I grew up in a house where the four adults smoked.
According to the latest health warnings I was probably a nicotine addict by default when I was 10 years old.
During the war and all the time my Dad was in the forces he was given free cigarettes (blue liners they were called in the Navy) It was even considered healthy at one stage to smoke.

It was after I started that all the health warnings started being issued

If you didn't ever start well good for you but stop treating those who do like pariahs.

As noted on the other thread I finally manage to quit 12 years ago

You have cut me deep ( Shrek - the Donkey)

Seriously though, my mum and Dad ( god rest his soul) smoked like chimney's in our house until mum gave up about 30 years ago and smoking got Dad when he was 52, so I have no intention of ever even trying one. He tried many times to give up but became so ill, he started again pretty quickly and so proved that it was very addictive ( certainly in his case)

It is the arragance of people in restaurants that really piss me off. One tosser actually many years ago in London said to me once that he could smoke when he liked and proceeded to flick ash in my soup. Suffice it to say he struggled to drink through his mouth for a week or so. I was so incensed. I decked him one. I was not proud of that but I was so annoyed.

What about our free will?

What about my democratic right?

The right not to have to smell people smoking, that foul smell that clings to my clothes and hair. To have to talk to someone, where you can smell that horrid odour going out of their mouth and up your nose. etc. etc. etc.

If people want to smoke, that's fine. You have a right to smoke. Just not when it effects other people.

But what about respecting other people's health. If I had a bad cold and went around coughing my disease into everyone's faces, there would soon be something done.

I'm with Artois there. Yorkie, if smokers' smoke only affected them do you think anyone would give a toss about whether they do it? From where I stand, it is the smokers that are self-righteous and couldn't give a damn about anyone else.

I've never known a smoker who had to go home and wash his/her clothes just because the person next to them wasn't smoking...

Its different for different smokers though. I won't smoke if i am affecting somebody who is eating and if politely asked will put my cigarette out any way. Generalising that smokers are all self righteous is unfair.

its a tough argument to win, i think a bit of common sense is needed on the part of the council and the govt if anything is going to work, a blanket ban certainly will not.

Again I agree.

A lot of my friends will not smoke if it's affecting someone else. They'll wave the smoke out of the way etc.

But most smokers are self righteous. Not all. But most.

Why the feck should they have to ask you if you'd mind not stinking up their air? Why shouldn't you be the one asking them if they would mind terribly if you filled the air around them with toxins?

Thats ridiculous mate, I'm sorry but it's not the way the world works. How many times have you asked someone to stop driving about because they are ruining the air around you. None? Surprise surprise.

When I smoked I wouldn't have smoked in anyone's house or near them if they didn't like it.

I don't blame you for decking that guy Dave. That is complete arrogance and ignorance on his part.

Smoking claimed my Dad too although he managed to live until he was 78 (lung cancer then)

It is the same with most things there are considerate and inconsiderate people.

The only defence I would give to smokers is that is it extremely difficult to give up and making them out to be social pariahs actually doesn't help them.

Drinkers on the other hand cause death, beatings and violence and yet no-one has considered closing down all the pubs and clubs

I like a smoke but I also know a lot of people don't. I'm quite happy to go outside and light one up if needed, but don't piss and moan at me if I'm at the bar or in the smoking section because I'll tell you where to shove your views.:smokin:
