My understanding is that Shrove Tuesday is the big feast before Ash Wednesday which is the start of Lent. 40 days before Easter.

We all binge on pancakes but often ignore Lent.

That article is confusing Imbolc which is always on February 2nd halfway between midwinter and Spring.
The Christian version is Candlemas or Chandeleur, when pancakes are also eaten because they look like the sun, and symbols the return of light.
It is nothing to do with Shrove Tuesday or Ash Wednesday which is movable. Lent is a time of preparation when people often fasted so used up their fat, flour and eggs. Mardi Gras - Fat Tuesday.
Nowadays, it’s just giving something up rather than fasting.

Christian and pagan holidays are interwined. Understandably, early Christians latched their holidays onto the traditions that were prevalent at the time. That's a much easier sell to would-be converts than telling them they have to ditch long-standing rituals and take up the Christian ones.

With that in mind, today I'll be sacrificing a goat and a dog before feasting them running through the streets naked.
