I am a yes man, but only for certain crimes, Cop killers, Kid killers like that young girl gunned down in her family shop, and mass murder like terrorist attacks.

But the evidence would have to prove 100% guilt and i would want extensive investigations to proof beyond doubt the people where to blame.

There is no real deterrent in this country at the moment.
Are you waiting to join the police ? Serious question as you seem to be very "pro".

No i have family in the police though and friends. Just the way i feel they go out every day to protect us and then someone does a despicable crime like this week luring 2 officers to there death i believe that man deserves to die, the thing is with the death penalty for me also. Is that sometimes i feel its to good for certain people it gives them basically a get out clause some know they will never see daylight again so i think some would not be bothered at all by it. I also feel supporting people in Prison for 50 plus years is a complete waste of money.

I think that I have asked this question before (but don't recall an answer) but is there a source of reliable figures comparing murders/'000 for countries with/without capital punishment to see if it actually forms a deterrent?

The best evidence for this is the USA, as in some states the death penalty exists, and in others it does not.

The statistical evidence indicates that the death penalty has a zero deterrent effect.

Capital punishment won't stop the most determined murderers, rapists, child abusers, terrorists etc committing the original crime. It'll probably stop them re-offending though...

I personally believe in it in theory, but in practice ? I wouldnt trust the government or Old Bill to boil an egg , let alone kill people legally, what do you think ?

So you'd be happy (in theory) for a white English person to exact a brutal, outdated, horrific form of punishment on you or your fellow countrymen but object to the idea of a foreigner doing the same? You're a living, breathing cliche.

Why is murdering a policeman any worse than murdering anyone else?

why isnt it?

There put there to protect us, go out every day and put there life's on the line protecting us every day, then they get ambushed like this. Joe blogs would not have been called into a situation like this, only a policeman or another member of the emergency services.

There her to protect us so i would say killing them in such a callus act is greater then killing you or me in the street.

Not for me. Many reasons why but simply that one mistake is one mistake too many should suffice.

Try telling that to the mother and father of someone who has just had their child murdered. "Sorry for your loss folks, it would be far worse if it had been a police officer who died though"

No - for a couple of reasons. 1 - what happens if the person found guilty is killed and then new evidence shows that they are not-guilty ? And 2 - Its a cowards way out, they should remain in Prison for their whole life - much like USA where you get sentences like 250 years.

Thats why if you read my first post on the situation i said child killers should face the same.

Can I remind people that ideally we would like to keep this discussion on the main board, but once comments start getting aggressive towards others, it will be shifted to The Other Stuff.

Funny how people say "YES, but only for certain crimes". What a pointless statement and a vain attempt to sound reasonable. Well, of course it would only be for certain crimes. No-one's going to swing for dropping litter.

I've always wondered whats so bad about revenge ? Especially if it gives comfort to a victim of crime .

I honestly don't think it would. Sure, when the bloods pumping and you're enraged it would be hard not to want to wish all kinds of pain on someone who's murdered someone you're close to, for example.

But after, I doubt it would make you actually feel any better about it all. In fact I think it might lead me to feel worse.

I hope to god I'm lucky enough never to have to find out.

more violence never ends violence. It spreads like a cancer. The death penalty changes the entire character of a country and it changes the way citizens and rulers view themselves and each other. Be very careful what you wish for.

Funnily enough had an intense discussion last night/this morning at about 2am about this with my mates (big Chelsea fans bushy... ur not the only one ;)

I think capital punishment should be bought in for murders where all 3 of the below criteria is fulfilled.

1) There are say 5 or more independent witnesses
2) There is DNA evidence
3) CCTV footage. I think it could only come back if all the evidence points to guilty.

However my 2 mates were adamant for it to not be bought back having been done by bent old bill in the past, stitching them up as youths for minor crimes. They wouldn't want an innocent person being killed for a crime they were innocent.

At the very least we should build a super prison and when someone does murder, they get a minimum of 25years. No half sentences. No easy time either... no tv’s mobiles or playstations.... Would also create more jobs (win win)

My son is 20, he is still a child to me, as is the case for every parent.

I am not saying he is not, god forbid I was ever in that situation I would feel the same, but IMO killing a child there can be no valid reason other than being a sick deranged person. My argument is a young adult would be able to act in self defence, not saying it makes it right. I just feel killing an infant young child is a crime that is beyond any reasonable understanding in my mind.

My birth mother and partner tried to kill me when I was 1 year old myself with a 4month old and a 4 year old I can't understand it.

bushy, I agree with you. Write it down, because it'll never happen again.
