Wow, this could divide like Brexit.

Give him the bloody thing, then he might disappear to some tax haven quietly.

Well put, and I'd add there's an obvious reason why Hamilton is being singled out. He's black and the constant sniping of him whilst ignoring similar traits in other paler sportsman has it's roots in racist attitudes.

The British driver lives in Monaco but does pay tax in a number of countries where F1 takes him including the UK, where he has a home and where his contributions put him among the top 5,000 taxpayers.

“The knighthood will be seen as recognition of not just his driving but also as a black driver that has bust another door open for anyone who is not white. He has destroyed the preconception that it can’t be done, that there is an area where you cannot achieve something because of the colour of your skin. He has totally destroyed that notion.”

Button and Coulthard didn’t stick their nose into racism, whilst Hamilton’s family have faced racism and he has an open opinion on it. Another reason to hate a black man and like the white sportsmen.

Of course, it isn't about race you numpty.

I don't believe Moss should have been knighted.

Perhaps I didn't like his ears???

Your argument appears to be that he has the best car and can only deserve recognition if he wins the championship next season in a Haas (ignoring the fact he has got there because he is the best, and keeps beating his teammates), he earns too much money and should take a pay cut to prove something or another (Mercs aren't a charity, they will pay as little as they can), he is a tax dodger (proven to be inaccurate) and that his personality isn't as effervescent as previous British drivers (he is more focused on winning than the media, thats true). And definitely nothing to do with race. So i can only conclude you are :fishing:

My debate is:

The Merc car has been in a different class for year's, eg 6 years
Bottas, is not world class, seat a decent driver in the same team like Verstappen and see how he performs.Button and Rosberg both gave him a torrid time and he didn't like it.
Never mentioned about his tax dodging at all???
Never mentioned he isn't effervescent???
Race is only mentioned by those that feel it gives them some leverage.

Oh yeah and Hamilton brings politics into sport and stirs the nation.

He doesn't deserve the queen's sword upon his shoulders.

2017 & 2018 the Ferrari was as fast if not faster. Both Ferraris finished ahead of Bottas ‘18 in 2nd and 3rd. 2018 was the season your after if you’re looking for Lewis winning a title without being in the fastest car. His pole lap in Singapore is already the stuff of legend.

The problem you have is that he brings politics that you disagree with into sport. If he was a rabid brexiteer you’d be singing his praise.

How Ferrari didn’t win in 2018 is down to him and him alone. When Bottas took the seat there was a lot of people saying he would push Hamilton to the wire .... he didn’t and it isn’t because he’s shit!

If he was bleating on about Brexit, I would be exactly the same high profile sportspeople should stick to their professions as the have they ability to divide the nation.
In 2018 he had a good year.

He was beaten by team mates in the past like Button, Rosberg and Alonso and guess what they had the same car.
He has a car that has obliterated F1 for the past 6 years, that is why he has appeared dominant.

Over the course of a season, he finished ahead of Alonso in his first year in F1 and won the championship in his 2nd.

Being a top sports person does not preclude you from having a political voice. You can disagree with what they say but not for who they are. We live in a democracy and it is their right. You could say the same for actors or musicians ...

Are people still genuinely arguing about Hamilton's achievements and ability?

Just in case they are:

Debut season - missed out on winning the title in the last race of the season. Beat his team mate, the back to back reigning world champion, Fernando Alonso.

2nd Season - Won the world championship in a car that wasn't the fastest.

3rd season: 2 wins in the third fastest car, more than double the points of his team mate.

4th season: 3 wins, beat his team mate, the reigning world Champion, Jenson Button.

5th season: His worst one. One win, beaten by Button.

6th season: 4 wins, beats Button.

7th season: Moves to Mercedes. One win, beats his team mate Nico Rosberg.

8th season: World champion,beats Rosberg.

9th season: World Champion, beats rosberg.

10th season: More wins than Rosberg but is beaten to the title by 5 points. Rosberg promptly retires.

11th - 14th season: World champion.

to sum up:

The most world titles(tied with schumacher)
The most race wins
The most podium finishes
The most pole positions
The greatest rookie season in history
Nine consecutive podiums to start his career
Has beaten every single team mate, including two reigning world champions
The only driver in history to win at least one race every season he has raced
Has won the world title in a car that wasn't the fastest on the grid
Has proven himself to be a master of all conditions

But yeah, apart from that he's not very good, is lucky and doesn't deserve any recognition.

Some people just can’t support an exemplary British achievement. They’d rather knock a British sportsman that has dominated a sport than support them. #proudtobeBritish

And won the F2 championship - or GP2 as it was then - in 2006 and 15 out of 21 races in F3 in 2005 where the machinery is more equal to aid the "yeah but I could drive that Mercedes round" crowd. Still, I think he's shit because he flew 1st class and wouldn't mingle at Donnington or wherever.

History will judge him more fairly. Steve interesting Davis and Nick Faldo were 2 examples of being largely unloved by the media and public during the height of thier success but are seen in better context now. The English prefer a plucky loser to someone who actually wins stuff.

Plus, in some recent seasons where Ferrari developed a faster car, unrelentingly hunting them down. Pressured Vettel and the Ferrari team, in pit stops and on tyre strategy, crumble in race after race.

as much as he is a good bloke, NO. ultimately, its probably 80% car and 20% driver. Look at Button. world champ one year, joins maclaren and then hes at the back of the grid. And his team ate Alonso. another world class driver in the right car so no, sorry Lewis. Come back when you have donated some of your millions to helping deprived children
