Should cars be banned for 45 minutes each morning?

What about a total car ban in our city between 7.45 and 8.30 every weekday morning, this could leave roads free for all cyclist to travel to school and work.
Might make a huge impact on obesity in our society and cut down car trips. Also we could have a 3.15pm to 4.00pm ban for homeward journeys.

At the same time why don't we just make the Brighton/Sussex/UK economy as uncompetitive as possible in as fast a time as possible. It's slowly happening anyway.

Problem is, you can't set off 15mins early as EVERYONE is trying to get in by 7:45 so you actually have to leave 1 hour early and then they'd be traffic mayhem at 7:30 and what happens at 7:45? Do people still in cars just stop? turn round? Go home?

As for banning cars at 3:15-4pm that's almost worse, it means more people who work flexi hours end up going home after 4 increasing the traffic in the late rush hour! Also, many parent pick up children from nursery, school etc. on the way back from work.

In the interim, all you actually may achieve is moving the rush hour, not removing it. Instead of trying to fix the rush hour at 8:30, you then need to fix the rush hour at 7:30. What do you do then, move it back even further?! :D

Trains & buses are running at nigh on full capacity and to increase demand on them would be unworkable/impossible.

It would affect business quite significantly and many businesses (and employees) would end up relocating taking a LOT of money out of the economy of the town(s) in question. What jobs are these cyclists going to go to if their employer has upped sticks and moved elsewhere?

As for making people fitter, this is (and always has been) a personal choice of diet/exercise. There are loads of people who commute by car/train/bus who are fit as they eat well and exercise without needing to cycle to work. I cycle for fun and play sports but drive to work (no other way of getting to work for one!).

There's loads of other reasons why it wouldn't work, I won't go into them now as I'm not in the business of feeding everything to the hard of thinking :D

Ultimately, it's a stupid and unworkable idea. By all means, encourage more cycling, walking etc. but it only ever works if done by the carrot approach and never the stick.

How does a physical disabled person get their young children to school?

How does a physical disabled person get their young children to school?
drive after 8.30 or before 7.45 or move nearer a school or get one of those bikes with a childs buggy on it or get someone else with one to give them a lift.
it might take a bit off effort but just because they are disabled does not mean they can't contribute to a better city:moo:

Well that's me done, I'm out of this debate.

On the bus?

Believe it or not, up until the early 1980s, most children (including primary school children) made their way independently to and from school - either by walking, bus or bike. The idea that your mum would DRIVE you to school was, frankly, EMBARRASSING.

Move house? Change job?

I'm guessing the current economic situation meaning selling houses, getting mortgages and finding new jobs is close to impossible has passed you by ?

To answer the original fishing question. Completely stupid idea that would just mean more cars on the road either side of the time window meaning more congestion and pollution.

why would removing the school run traffic harm the city?

Most regulation strangles economic growth. If we start telling people that cars cannot be used for the daily commute we are restricting choice of employment opportunities etc etc, thus leading to jobs not being filled by the best people. You could say travel at different times, use public transport or a multitude of other options, but in reality more regulation slows industry and business down, at a time that we can least afford it..

Are you, RotR, going to compensate all the taxi drivers for lost revenue?

Ban bikes, pedestrians, school children and anyone who does not drive from the roads - tarmac more undeveloped land make more roads and dont vote green.

I start work at 8am every day. Could you give me some suggestions as to how I should get to work?

Do what I do, arrive 15 minutes before you are due to START work so you are logged in ready for when you are meant to start. Or are you oneof these that arrives when you are due to start and take 5-10 minutes to log in, get tea made etc.... so actually start at 8:05-8:10?

I like that idea. Lorry's are only second to motorbikes as the scum of the road and the biggest problem with the british road network.

errrr what? Motorbikes are the best form of transports in terms of everthing. The hardly damage the road so less money would be spent on road repairs (lower taxes). They don't create jams because of their small size. They take up less parking space and so lots can be parked in a small area and they don't emit as much CO2. In what world are motorbikes the "scum of the road" and a problem for the British road network?

this is a good suggestion, though I liked the idea in France whereby lorries over a certain size were banned from certain roads and motorways during weekends....... resultng in fewer jams, and fewer accidents during those periods...... leaving a free run for 'civilians' trying to enjoy themselves in their free time.

or maybe the french have invested in an amazing road network tolled and untolled that serves the nation properly - and a fantastic high speed railway network that is affordable, clean and runs on time. Also the fact the the country is 3 times the size of the UK and had the same size population and there for the the road network is less conjested (other than the parisian peripheriqic).

Ahhh the school run

The only time you see a 'soccer' mum driving a huge 4x4 with a small child in the back!

The bloody school run adds like 30 mins to my drive to work! Bloody annoying, maybe the fat kids should walk, them the would just be kids
