I'm going to guess that plenty of the people having a pop haven't even considered a form of transport other than cars. I reckon a shift in mindset is what is needed.
All day long - this.

Sussex coastal towns and villages being over developed and gridlocked my well be the only way to get people to look beyond the end of their paved over front garden.

The trains are not perfect, but I think they are running better than they were 5ish years ago. They are frequent and not hugely expensive.

In terms of cycling, going west to Worthing is a great route. Going east to Brighton, not so much. At peak times that's only for confident cyclists.

I think the local buses are fine.

Last point, when these sites were industrial, there would have been fewer cars but more lorries and other heavy polluting traffic
I agree with a lot of that but not necessarily the last bit….it wasnt heavy industry along that seafront area and i wouldnt say there was a huge use of heavy lorries …..indeed you could say that refers to the north side of the road.

Oh and i like nothing more than cycling around my local area (trying to avoid potholes)…however for work a vehicle is the only possible method

You struggle to park in Shoreham and only have to look at West Street, Church Street... well anything west of Surrey Street and south of Western Road is chock full of parked cars, cars parked on pavements etc. We have to do better than this, it's choking the life out of the town. North of my outlined section of town house owners (with the collusion of the local council) have paved over almost every front garden to park 2, 3, 4 or more vehicles all the while taking away kerbside parking. For the benefit, as has been said, of a mode of transport that sits idle for 90% of the time. How did it ever come to this?
I've driven down to the town and parked there more than 1,500 times in my life – never have I failed to find a parking space. It might not be exactly where I need to go (I got lucky this morning – as I said – and pulled up right outside. Something that happens more than people will believe, or admit to), but, at worst, it's a 5-7 minute walk from my desired destination.

People are lazy, so they WILL park on pavements and single- and double-yellows, double park and, basically, think they are the only one on the road. That's by no means unique to SBS, but it IS a problem with the driver(s), not the town itself. And you're NEVER going to get people to give up their cars, but what will happen (and is happening) is people not having a car (either current residents or immigrants), so the whole parking/gridlock thing is not an issue for them.

So many carbrains complaining about the overdeveloped of Shoreham (let's face it this could be anywhere along the coast).

Yet the first mention of bus lanes, cycle lanes, pedestrianisation gets howls of derision and ripped out in favour of a mode of transport that carries 1 person and is stationary for well over 90% of any 24 hour period.
Ah man – the level to which it all kicked off during Covidtime when the TEMPORARY cycle lanes were installed was off the scale. There was one bellend along the USR who refused to move their car. It still sits there now almost permanently. Not to mention the business owner who complained that their customers would have nowhere to park – failing to acknowledge that there was space for about four vehicle ON THEIR DRIVEWAY :lolol:

You just made that post without reading the thread didn't you? Or certainly you've read it very selectively.

I’d agree with the ‘lazy’ bit and it’s possible to get a space if you are prepared to take some time…..and the people who park on double yellows etc 🤦‍♂️…..but then if i am shopping I’d be using Lidl or holbush and wouldnt be quite so keen on walking a distance

You may be thinking of Burgess Hill?

That wasn’t an eco point. It was just a weird situation of 100’s of homes being built on the near Ditchling Common/World’s End side. Whilst the obvious solution is by the improved link road on the west of BH.

My wild guess would be because the masterplan looks neat and tidy, balanced. Someone else suggested brown envelopes.
Most of that area West of Jane Murray Way looks like being commercial development now rather than housing.

To be fair, I don’t keep a car and the 700 gets me back and forth to wherever I need to go quite well.

There has been some sort of traffic issue along the Brighton Rd almost continuously for the last few years.

I just allow a bit of extra time to get through Shoreham.

My issue is that no infrastructure has been put in place to serve all the new residents. And that the new buildings don’t really fit the spirit of the place.

Yes, Shoreham is getting busier but that’s okay. Lots of towns are expanding. And we do need housing.

I don’t know. Perhaps it’s just I’m a middle aged man who just wants things to stay the same. Which of course, is unrealistic.

In my defence I am going back to the 70s/80s. In those days you could bowl along the A259 from Lancing and wouldn't really hit any traffic until you were almost in Brighton; four or five cars in front of you at traffic lights was considered 'busy'. From about 1990 until my son moved there in 2020 I had barely re-visited Shoreham, and when I did it was by train.

On a general point I am not anti-development. (Yes, I know they all say that, it's a bit like saying "I'm not racist but ...", but I'm really not!) After all it's because of the Shoreham developments that my son has his own place - and it's in Sussex where he wants to live, near all his friends and family, and he wasn't forced to move out of the area because he couldn't afford it.
That was nearly 50 years ago – the whole WORLD was different then, let alone traffic levels.

Your other point about not being anti-development is a valid one. The amount of Shoreham-by-Sea residents who MOAN about new developments, from the comfort of a property that was built in those last 40-50 years always makes me laugh! The trouble is, I think, that residents want more people to come to the town and spend their money but, when they've done that, they want them to fack off to one of the lesser towns either side, but still come back again. The thought of them coming and staying horrifies some locals :hilton:

If you were shopping at either of those places, you'd be able to park onsite, no?

You just made that post without reading the thread didn't you? Or certainly you've read it very selectively.
You're going to have to enlighten me as the thread is entitled Shoreham Traffic, there are numerous posts about new developments and gridlock - far too many to link.
Yes I was selective as I glossed over Birmingham, Immigration and the anti Lancing stuff (because - I didn't understand).

But to me this thread reads like one suggesting too many homes and not enough room, with the main theme running through of 'I can't drive my car because there are too many other cars on the road'. - please tell me otherwise.

At the end of the day, limited alternative routes and further redevelopments ongoing in and around Shoreham mean the traffic issues will not be improving anytime soon, so I guess, suck it up and get on with it, moaning about it ain't changing diddly squat.

For what it is worth coming from Shoreham myself, I think change is a good thing and the modernisation of Brighton road, and surrounding areas are a good thing, no one can say all that baron wasteland, shitty factory buildings and scrap metal dealerships was better.
