Shoreham Air show crash

1. Going onto Google & Wikipedia are hardly what I call academic research.

2. The comparison of the incidence of air accidents and car accidents is not absurd, it is called risk assessment which amongst other things is what I do for a living and have done for over 25 years.

3. The last time you watched an air show something happened and that has informed your view, utterly ridiculous from a statistical point of view. The final point in your post (about pilots deciding where to eject) is so obviously stupid it doesn't need addressing.

1. I never said it was academic research - it is just a list of deaths at air shows. Probably looking at 12 in England and Germany last weekend.

2. What you do for a living has as much relevance to this discussion as what i do for a living. None. Please do not think it adds any validity to your argument. The number of deaths that occur at air shows (slightly different to air accidents) compared to car accidents is also irrelevant.

3. My point about the red arrows - far from being stupid (thanks for the personal abuse) - was to illustrate that these shows can be staged in a way that places less people in danger when accidents occur. Its called risk mitigation - but then you would know all about that.

Haven't posted anything thus far, but seeing Facebook over the past few days has really got to me. The degree of separation between me and those involved in this is way too small. BHA fans, friends of friends. It's just bloody awful.

The air crash investigators and crowd safety specialists on this thread should maybe consider piping down a little bit. It's making you all look very inconsiderate.

I was hardly speculating, I was criticising someone who was saying 'the pilot had a lot to answer for'.

Quite right, there is no evidence that the pilot has anything to answer for.

Why a loop manoeuvre was allowed so close to a busy A road is more significant an issue in my opinion.

I have said it before and will say it again, this is not the thread to start speculating what went wrong, professional people will do that with a full enquiry so just show respect for many people who are seriously affected by this tragedy.

Feared it could be 20 people now

Hmm - I had a fairly un-shakeable belief that we accept these things are dangerous and there is known risk attached etc etc but this is beginning to make me think. Even though this is clearly a very 'unlucky' incident, it's obvious people are going to challenge the validity of airshows - Not just Shoreham, all of them share a similar risk.

Give it a rest ..... there's due process that will be followed that no doubt in the fullness of time we will all know the reasons and cause. In the meantime please respect that there are local people awaiting news of relatives and some of that news will be horrific news, some will effect people posting on here. It doesn't need amateur air investigators second guessing things on here. Have some sensitivity.

Meanwhile potentially 20 people have lost their lives, numerous families have been effected forever, and people on here continue to argue about whose point is right and whose is wrong. Good work everybody.

I hope that is a massively pessimistic estimate.

Sadly Moto at it's quietest it's a busy stretch of road, esp as the traffic lights keep everyone close together.
Even without the airshow traffic 13:20 is bang on Albion traffic o'clock.
As horrific as an estimate of 20 fatalities is, it's not even half a bus.
Or to bring it even closer to home, half a Seagulls Travel bus which at least one would have been less than a minute away.

My fear is that although the focus has been on cars being involved, there's usually a fair number of people on foot who watch the show from that area near the traffic lights, plus there'll be car park stewards around there.

I've seen two videos from different angles and the plane seems to dip to the left and loses lift. I wonder if there was a left engine malfunction. Whatever it was, it won't change anything. Just so very tragic.

It's a single engined plane

Good point.

I saw two photos on a media site yesterday (I'm not going to upload them, 'cos it seems so ghoulish), taken just a couple of seconds apart.

The first shows the plane flying perilously low over the A27, while a crowd of people are stood by the road just beyond the former Sussex Pad (?)

The second photo shows the fireball as the plane hit the road just beyond the Sussex Pad (the end of which is clearly visible).

This suggests that the plane crashed and exploded in the road right in front of where these onlookers were stood, and who presumably would have been engulfed in the fireball or fatally hit by flying debris.

The footage of the crash is one of the most horrific things I have ever seen.

I can't begin imagine the trauma of those who: a) lost loved ones, and b) witnessed it first hand, such as the car-drivers who were just a few seconds in front or past the point where the plane crashed.

Clicking on the Mirror news link further back in the thread I finally plucked up the courage to look at some of the footage.
I then found myself watching a 30 sec ad for Kelloggs breakfast cereal before the carnage.

Nobody can be happy with that.

Still in shock that so many people going about their everyday normal lives can be caught up in such a horrific accident.

To the ghouls picking over this, give it a rest will you. Time & a place eh.

Thoughts & prayers to anyone who has any involvement in this.

A well constructed interview given by the (my) local MP Tim Loughton on bbc news prog.

I hope its better than the ones he gave on Saturday, unless they were badly edited he just talked about the need to not stop the airshow, missed the enormity of the accident and the pain and anguish of the victims family and friends. Hopefully he has changed his stance and helping the community deal with this tragic event on our doorsteps.

I thought the same, difficult to imagine that some of them weren't seriously injured. Poor things.
