Shops gone that you miss

Remember as a kid the cheese counter in Woolies, looking back seemed on odd thing to have.

Tiger Music, Sydney Street and Southern Music which I remember had a couple of locations in Hove over the years. Also Leisure and Pleasure the toy shop in Burgess Hill because I worked there when at school and college.

Another fond memory [as everyone seems to miss the record shops] is of Wickham, Kimber & Oakley in George St. Hove. Looking through some old 45's the other day found one of their paper bags they put the 45's in. It's a fair few years old now.

When did they shut ? Went there regularly at the end of the 80's and always came out with a bag of fanzines and books

Hunters often ran a good line in drugs at times, before one raid 50 men went into the shop and up to the till...only 2 came out with a carrier bag

C & A are still very much alive and kicking, they just left the UK. Seen them in quite a few malls in Spain.

I'll add my name to the long list of those who miss Woolies. Bought my first vinyl in Blatchington Road branch and used to find the Southwick Square branch particularly good for coloured/picture albums and 12" singles.

Having grown up in Shoreham I also miss Dennis Lee's toy shop. Just about all of my airfix kits came from there. As I recall the owner had hair slicked back with brylcreem and a proper spiv moustache.

There's a Taj on Western Road! a mere 10 minute brisk walk.

I loved Borders, spent hours in there reading the books and mags on the comfy chairs and no one gave a damn.

Woolies (the Blatchington Road and London road ones were hideous though)

I don't know if there were branches in Brighton but growing up in the North shopping trips with mum always included visits to MacFisheries, Home & Colonial and Booths.

Each had there own unique smells!

Booths are still going I believe

Borders, even though their foray in to the market here consisted of one superstore only. US and UK versions of magazines beside each other on the shelf and some of the most detailed (if poorly stocked - 1 copy of everything) specialist sections, not even the remaining few independents come close to that.

Anyone else remember Attrix Records in Sydney Street, and Vinyl Demand, somewhere off Trafalgar Street? Many happy teenage hours and much money spent in those places.

Not sure what it was called, but was a store in Franklands Village (Jacks?) You could buy anything from a tin of tuna to a pair of trainers..........now a co-op or some other variety of souless-ness. Used to drive from Worthing to there (via me nans house) to see what was what.........

It was perfect for its mere convenience... I work next door! You could understand the frustration of seeing it turned into a Sainsburys!!

Another who misses Woolies... Our Price records I think were bought by WH Smith (not certain) ... Used to be loads of Sperrings shops - where did they go ? Mind you in Bognor most of the shops have gone !!!

There was a similar shop in Lewes until around 95 - Ransomes - which sold anything and everything, if cheap and often 'seconds'. It was where Ask is now at the traffic lights by the law courts.

I think these shops were scuppered by the Poundlands of this world (as was Woolies).

Fond memories of Snot and Nasty punk shops in Air Street - dayglo striped socks and lumo leopard print t-shirts my favourite , Virgin Records in Queens Rd and Vinyl Demand for anything punk, new wave and electronic. Wicks Models and Toys opposite the level for a new Scalextric car then into the open market with me dad for a crab from one of the many fishmongers straddled down the centre aisle. Jack Ball fishing tackle in Edward St for lugworm and second hand tackle before a Saturday morning fishing trip on the PALACE pier catching pouting and a cold. Alpine Sports basement - the smell of griptape....Python 3's and Kryptonic seconds were all I could afford.

Understood. Sainsbury's convenience stores are the worst.
