He can still bowl. I think he should come back, he is the greatest bowler ever. If he was only half as good as he was he'd still be amazing.

Close wasn't brought back as a captain - he played against West Indies in 1976 at the age of 45 but Greig was captain.
You could have also mentioned Colin Cowdrey who got recalled in 1974/75 to play against Lillian Thompson.
It wouldn't totally shock me to see Warne come back but it would surprise me.

Sorry my mistake I know Close was brought back to face the Windies fast bowlers, no protective headgear then, but thought it was as captain, thanks for putting me right. memory does funny things with you as you get older

Warne's said he's not physically up to it. He rekons he can bowl 8 overs and his back plays up.

Bit harsh that, Harris bowled well considering that he had no support and it was a flat pitch - but the rest looked crap. Who on earth decided that Bollinger and Doherty were test cricketers? They must be seriously deluded.

I bet the dilemma is killing him though.
Deep down, he knows he isn't physically up to it, and is well out of match practice, as well as the fact that he probably wouldn't want to risk tarnishing his brilliant reputation with some kind of final embarrassment at England's hands.
On the other hand, it must be rubbing his ego up BIG time, having all these people even mentioning the idea, and I bet he'd secretly love the idea that he might be able to ride up, like a knight in shining armour, and turn the series around. He'd love to prove that even now, older and fatter than ever, he could still do it against the old enemy.
He did say, quite clearly, the other day, that he couldn't see himself returning, but that he'd never rule it out.

he would come back but unfortunately he cant get back into his whites.......
If he did come back he could act as the sight screen when not bowling.

While it's great to watch the Aussies flattened, at the same time, there's a distinct absence of pantomime villains on their team for the Barmy Army to get at. No Warne, McGrath, Lee, not even a Big Mervyn Hughes
Even Ponting cuts a fairly dismal figure now, although it never gets boring seeing him wound up.
Imagine the impact on both sides' fans if that fat chozzer Warne entered the arena

Didn't he take a full drive from a WI batsman straight on the forehead while fielding at silly mid-on and shouted 'catch it' as it bounced in the air and he collapsed in a heap? They don't make-em like that any more!

I really hope not for two reasons.
Firstly he is quite simply a legend in my eyes and one the greatest players ever to play the game and to return to a failing Aussie side and bowl maybe 20 overs a day max and with the form that Englands top order are in would probably go round the park, and that would tarnish his legend somewhat.
Secondly I have an irrational fear that all of the above is rubbish and he will win them the Ashes all by himself!!

I would love to see Warne selected. Amazing theatre.
He has too good a cricket brain not to be used by Australia in some capacity. I'm sure, even now, that he would pose more problems than Xavier and could help out Ponting tactically.

I think you'll find Warne captained the Rajasthan Royals again in April of this year, and took 11 wickets at 34.63. He was joint highest wicket taker for the Royals.
He's been turning his arm more than people might think. He also has a great cricket brain, much more so than Ponting whose fields are mostly baffling at times!

Would love to see it but don't think it will happen. Its a measure of the Aussies desperation though that Warne is even being talked about, they really are a total shambles with no match winning players or real characters like the Aussie teams of old. I actually find Warne a very good commentator and he talks a lot of sense, the fat wanker!
