I did French and German at A/S Level after getting A's in both at GCSE and didn't find it THAT much harder. Mind you, languages always seemed to come naturally to me (makes up for my being utter shite at Maths, I suppose. I got a C in my GCSE and was more than happy with that as I hated the subject and never had any real interest in it).

I got a B in French and C in German at A/S Level, and would have been on for about the same in my A2 if I'd finished the courses.

I'm currently doing a GCSE in an 'ology and all we are doing is being coached to pass the coursework/exams

I already have a Degree in a humanities subject, where critical evaluation is the order of the day

All this 'learning' by rote on my present course devalues it in my estimation

Too much emphasis on 'getting grades' and not enough on exploring themes

I found maths a massive step up from GCSE to A Level.

Though now doing some of the A Levels in my degree it comes much easier, probably because it has a context and application. A level maths was all book based.

Clearing out the other day, I found my GCE 'O' Level certificate. The interesting thing is that grades were not recorded on the certificate.

Maths, Physics, English Language, English Literature, French, German, Latin, Geography.

Got an A at As maths and have my A2 exams in June:yahoo:

A chimp can get a good grade at AS Maths. There is very little difference from GCSE.

I wouldn't be too confident!

Saw a great letter in the weekly telegraph yesterday from a guy who had recently been made redundant and he wanted to get into teaching. He has 9 O levels, 3 or 4 A levels, a degree and a masters degree. When he went to apply he was asked how many GCSE's he had. When he replied 'none', he was told he could not apply as you need at least 5 GCSE's to qualify. He explained what O levels were but the computer system they were using did not accept them anymore!!

I read somewhere that competition for places at the best universities is so fierce, they ask for your GCSE grades as well as your A Level grades. So if you slacked through high school and pulled your finger out at 6th. Form, you're fu*ked...

His ambition is to work in the City as an actuary specialising in pensions and insurance.

What 8 year old even knows what that means.

I got a B at GCSE through doing no work and not being taught most of the A/A* stuff. Left me a bit f***ed for AS though so I dropped down to Foundations of advanced maths which is ok, and might do AS maths again next year.

I got 4 C's at GCE in English Lang., Maths, Technical Drawing and Woodwork and 2 CSE grade 1's, which were equivalent to a GCE grade C, in History and Geography

Over thirty years ago now

In my experience, the step-up from GCSE to A-level is bigger than the step-up from A-level to degree.

generally at GCSE if you have enough ability in a subject then you can get a decent grade without REALLY trying, this isn't true whatsoever at a-level

if you don't put the effort in, you get found out pretty sharpish, which i found out to my expense

If people have equal grades to you, then to cut numbers they go back to your GCSE's, that's why you have to submit then with your UCAS
