We've actually got a secret 8th ... which is also not operational?

He is probably right though, it will be something ridiculous like them all having maintenance and doing it at the same time saves costs. Probably also true that if they had to be deployed immediately then they could be. But that wouldn't give the media a story I guess!

Though the report stated at the end that there were subs operational and available but could not be confirmed where they are by the MOD....to this end can the report be strictly true?

Besides don't confuse these subs with the 4 Vanguard Class that provide our Nuclear Deterrent.

Think the BBC story is more highlighting the fact the the aging and due to be replaced Trafalgar class are not fully covered by the current new 3 Astute class.

Next they will telling us we have Aircraft carriers without aircraft..

Astute and Trafalgar class submarines are not nuclear boats. They are hunter killer boats powered by nuclear but not carrying ballistic missiles.. SSNs as opposed to SSBNs. One of the Astute class is at sea trialling after repairs,
