Serious question - Are you HONESTLY scared/concerned by the swine flu outbreak?

re: 1918-19 epidemic; Spanish flu (in GB) was French flu (in Spain), Belgium flu (in France) and so on e.g. each european country named it differently, often selected because of derogatory references.

In contact with supplier today of surgical masks, demand for these JUST today exceeded their entire cumulative orders for the whole of last year!

During all the media hype currently, the fact that 12,000 people die every year in this country from seasonal flu isn't being mentioned much. A sense of proportion me thinks.....

Hmmm... My partner who is a nurse manager in the NHS does'nt think so, do not under-estimate the impact this could have. Directives have been sent out at a very high level, we are OVER DUE a flu pandemic.

By the way face masks are useless make sure you wash your hands, regularly.

Yes, but that's because it's being driven by government isn't it and companies, inc public sectors, are more risk-strategy/management orientated that they used to be. And are better at it, or at least better at looking like they have a plan. So it's natural we'll all hear more about these matters, even if you try shut yourself off from the media in all forms (nigh on impossible though these days). But it doesn't mean people should necessarily start to panic (not saying you or your girlfriend are). My company issued a 20 page circular today and steering groups have been formed etc. We did the same 2 years ago when another influenza outbreak looked likely. And I was part of one during the fuel crisis approx 10 years ago. Happens all the time in other words. Authorities are in a lose lose situation though. Accused of over-reacting if it comes to nothing whilst being blamed of not doing enough if it does. They have my sympathy to some extent. But that's life.

Re: the impending outbreak, we're also well overdue globally catastrophic volanic explosions, meteorites, quakes and other plagues according to my medical-geography studies.....which I concluded in 1994! None have happened to date to my knowledge.

But as there are more cases spreading across Britain I'm starting to get concerned about it.

I was sitting in Biology today, next to a Venezuelan girl. She asked the teacher how long it takes the symptoms to show - he said probably 3-5 days. He asked why, she said some Mexican visited her brother and they were both kept in quarantine. I was shitting it for a minute or two but she said they were both tested and are safe.

Without trying to alarm everyone, for i know nothing. We are at level 5 which means a pandemic is iminet. I dont think it would be wrong of me to say:

- buy some extra water
- buy some extra food
- oranages will help.

I flew in from NYC on Tuesday and everyone keeps asking how airports and the americans etc were reacting. No where near as dramatically as you'd believe watching news overhere was my take. Obviously the story's grown since, but I can't believe how many people were genuienly concerned I'd come back from USA with a slight sniffle. Calm down dears!

Guy in Tesco's today was trying to buy 5 packets of paracetamol and was arguing at the checkouts when they wouldn't let him (obviously they can't incase he is trying to top himself). But I felt like saying, get a sense of proportion and moderation mate - Panic Buying is self-perpetuating and your causing it!

Where has our national stiff upper lip gone? I say prescribe a screening of Zulu! to any potential malingerers out there

The reason why is because I worried about these things when I was in the first 3 brackets far too much. But as I got older, you do inevitably join the "seen it all before" brigade in many ways and on many matters to the point where these things just don't panic you like they used to.

I've just noticed that Sky news have NO breaking news story for the first time since the story broke! 'This Week' on BBC1 are taking the piss out of the outbreak to the hilt, so I can sleep safe in the knowledge tonight then it's all going to be alright...

To be fair, there is not alot we can do about it. Personaly i think it will all blow over, but remember this WILL come back in winter.

Also remember there is nothing stupid about have 1 months sulpy of baked beans for example. Lots of water. Becaucse IF this does go rotton the country will go into shut down. Nobody will go to work. Not elcrticty or anything.

Nothing wrong with being prepard. (if you have a pet get them food as well!!!)
If nothing happens, just eat and drink it normally.
