It's that time of year again, isn't it? Yes it's the Mail, so customary pinch of salt required, however we are being linked with Man United benchwarmer and one-time Argentina no.1 Sergio Romero, should Maty be on his was as expected.

For me, Romero has probably been the best backup keeper in the world over his time at United, and would represent somewhat of a coup if we were able to get him, even though he's 34 in February. Fantastic pedigree, has been playing at the highest level for so many years. The only issue is that it would probably halt Sanchez's development somewhat, as he definitely isn't coming here as backup. And now for the showreel, socials etc...

£1.8M value on transfermarkt as his contract expires in the summer, so we wouldn't have to pay that much for him in all likelihood

She did post a rant on Instagram in October about how United weren't letting him leave, so the potential for some fireworks there

And now we wait for our first 'nothing doing on this one' of the new year...

As we now know potter told Ryan he could go in January, it’s a fair bet we have an experienced keeper lined up. Romero would make a lot of sense, while Sanchez, ahem, ‘finesses’ his distribution skills

I didn't realise Romero had amassed 96 caps for Argentina. He would be a great signing.

Sanchez has been superb since he came in, don’t see a reason to spunk big money wages on a 34 year old Argentinian when we have a young goalkeeper who has come through our system and is performing to a very good level already.

I think we have bigger worries in our squad to be honest.

Me neither, that said with the exception of the odd friendly his international career came to an end some 5 years ago, but does have a W/C final to his name, much like Graeme Meldrum Smith, no?

The way we're currently defending he could add to his CV:-

'Why did I sign for Brighton?'
along with
'Why did I sign for Utd?'

Best backup 'keeper in the PL imo, with the exception of Henderson. I'd be surprised if that's where we're spending though unless Ryan is definitely off.

If Ryan does leave, it would be a massive risk not to sign an experienced GK.

Sanchez has looked steady and hasn't done much wrong as of yet, but he's still very raw and if his form dips I don't think we can rely on Steele or Walton.

Romero on a short term deal to help keep us up makes a lot of sense - that being said, I think he'd probably favour a move to Spain or the MLS.

I think he'd be a good addition. He's a very good goalkeeper. Whenever he's stood in for De Gea he's looked fit, sharp and ready.

If we could get him on a free, or for a couple of million And assuming he's willing to take a huge cut in wages, I'd say yes in a heartbeat.

What makes me think it's less likely is Potter's comment about Steele being best suited to the backup keeper role. If Romero came in, he'd surely be #1 so would Sanchez be content back in the reserves?

We can’t score ****ing goals so we are being linked to a ****ing keeper when we have two perfectly competent ****ing goalkeepers!

I think Potter was being diplomatic rather than saying there’s been a big fall out, I’ve lost confidence in Ryan, Ryan’s out of the picture, etc
