You omit to mention that he also put in a fair number of goal saving tackles in the box and was quick enough to recover from some of his mistakes. Yes he was raw and a bit lightweight but you'd have to be blind or very biased not to have seen the potential.

Well I'm neither, and what potential he has/had did not outweigh the Leeds offer (nowhere near if you remember the widespread hilarity at the money we got). My view is based on what I saw every week, and he wasn't all that for us. In fact towards the very end was a very frustrating player.

In all honesty I believe Adam Hinshelwood has more potential in terms of what he can give us. And that is all I care about pal, what a player can give us, not Leeds.

Harding made mistakes, but only as many as (probably less than) Robinson, for instance, has made - yet his often resulted in goals, and were that much more apparent. He clearly wasn't the finished product, but he had an awful lot of ability, and we'd be a lot higher this season with him in the team, of that I'm sure.

One of the strangest player sales I can remember was Kurt Nogan going to Burnley. First part of the season he'd been on fire, smashing in the goals and helping us into the play-off places. He'd been good in the second half of 93/94 as well and was considered our top asset. I think Wimbledon and Liverpool were linked with million pound+ swoops for him.

Then we had that terrible run where we lost to Birmningham in the league (last minute goal I think), lost to Swindon in the League Cup and then beaten at Kingstonian (shudder). All of a sudden he stopped scoring and just looked utter wank most of the time. Never seen such a sudden and abrupt change in a player.

He eventually got sold to Burnley for 250k and no-one really gave a shit. If he'd been sold just a few months previous i'd have been devastated but his poor form meant that I didn't really care. Just such a quick turnaround in affections. In September he was the hero, by March it was a case of "close the door on your way out".

He was not the worst, but he was not class with us.

How the memory of his efforts has obviously faded.

Fair play to him if he cracks it at Leeds where his load is probably a bit lighter. He had a lot more defending to do with us and was lightweight, had poor concentration and made a lot of key mistakes that led to goals.
Harding had good technique and obvious promise, but made some elementary errors.

The boy has clearly now reduced the number of those mistakes and is obviously quite popular at Leeds, which supports McGhee's positive comments about him. Unfortunately, we were not in a position to be patient for him to iron out these mistakes from his game with first team experience - every point counts when you are fighting a relegation battle. Leeds had the money, they doubled his wages, and they are in a position to give him a chance to make those mistakes. Our gain is a financial one, there gain is that they are getting a promising young player who is getting better with experience.

In the end, we needed to sell him and it's time to to move on.

Jones & Watson were simply not good enough. Please remember back to when they played and EVERYONE said they were shit.

Nathan Jones was NEVER shit. He is the most underrated player we have ever have. Sadly I was in a minority of about 2 who thought this at the time.

You say every point counts but not having a decent left back is costing more points than Harding did.

Nope i agree, he always looked to go forward with the ball and had a decent cross on him as shown at Leeds away last year.

Yes and, more importantly than that, his attitude is and has always been spot on. If more belief had been shown in him, I am sure he could have done a more than able job at left back this season.

But he just was not good enough for this league he was either brilliant or utter wank and he was usually the later. We need consistancy and he just does not have it.

Jones was good going forward, could cross and worked hard but he wasnt a very good defender.

How many appearance has Nathan Jones made in this league for you to base this judgement on?

Not many but if he was good enough why is he not playing in our league at the moment?
Don't get me wrong because I did like Jonah but the proof is in the pudding as they say.

It could be argued that a lot of our current players would not be playing in this league were they not playing for us, it just seemed a waste to let him go when we have a lack of left sided players. I can't imagine he was on particularly large wages.

Jones always struck me as a headless chicken guaranteed to make at least one dreadful pass a game that left the opposition with a clear run on goal. I understand why he is being touted as better than Reid but I'm not sure he'd be any more effective.

I think we'll have to agree to disagree on that.

Could the same be said of Gary Hart?

To an extent yeah. Although I think considering Hart has not been playing there long he had done a great job.

I used to prefer Jones on the wing to when he played at left back.

Presumably McGhee let him go in the hope that he could get someone better, although obviously this hasnt happened. I prefer Kerry to Jones as a left back tho anyway.
