Scary Movies...

Barrel of Fun

Abort, retry, fail
I have (geek alert) set up a 'Scary Movie Night' with a few friends and we are struggling to find films that make you jump, as opposed to f***ed up horrors such as Saw 1 to 5. Any decent suggestions are much appreciated.

I want proper scary movies that make you jump on the night in question, not crazy films that leave you scarred for a few weeks.

Much obliged.

Ps My choice was The Shining - 5.3

'Rosemary’s Baby' - no real out and out scares but a good slow burner with a great cast, a horror classic.

I don't really rate the shining.

I'm struggling to think of a jumpy film that isn't a torture movie (would recommend Audition - the sack gave me my biggest jump in years), or doesn't leave you creeped out for a week (ring the japanese version, is the only film that's truly scared me in years). Final Destination?

For slightly less well known horror flicks I've always liked Session 9. Its pscyhological but not on the 'f***ed up for weeks' scale.

If you want one that will make you jump, this is a good'un. Doesn't really last in the memory though.

Oh I liked The Descent a lot. I always find someone to give it to for birthdays etc.

Wolf Creek - not full of jumps but it gets in your bones.

Funny Games (German version) - superbly frightening film.

As mentioned here already, REC (Spanish version)

The Grudge definitely and The Ring, or the japanese original Ringu if you can get it is apparently alot better.

I think with ring and ringu it depends on which you see first. I saw the japanese version first and found the remake to be awful, but some of my friends saw the remake first, loved that and thought the original was awful.
