I think with ring and ringu it depends on which you see first. I saw the japanese version first and found the remake to be awful, but some of my friends saw the remake first, loved that and thought the original was awful.

I'm not a fan of Kubrick in general. His films are always too dull for me.

.rec is a very good shout. Go for that.

Ringu is NOT scary due purely to the cheesy negative camera effects when the girl's "doing stuff". Not remotely scary.

The Shining is quality.

Probably the most underrated movie of the 80's IMO. The music composed by Ennio Morricone is simply superb.

Not a big fan of Horror but remember seeing "The Others" and found it a creepy little tale. Also I can't think of another film that features Eric Sykes and also has Nicole Kidman going to bed with a future Dr Who.

Also the original Stepford Wives is another creepy film without so much as a hint of gore.
