The bus slogan was "We send £350m to the EU every week, let's fund our NHS instead"

Are you seriously suggesting that doesn't broadly imply we would redirect most of that £350m to the NHS?

I guess it sounds more catchy to the gammon than "We send £350m to the EU every week, but that unlocks billions of pounds in tariff-free trade. We could spend it on the NHS instead if you want, we'll need it to treat increased food-poisoning from all that shit American chlorinated chicken we'll be forced to allow in when we're 'independent'"

'Broadly imply'? I'd say no.

At the time I interpreted it to mean that saving all of that wonga would mean that the NHS could be funded better.

Saving all that wonga when it has cost more than 47 years worth of contributions on getting us out, and will be costing more than £350 million to pay for all the customs & excise red tape after December 31st.

Duped in what way? I do not understand.

I took from your post that you believed we would have more spend when that is patently not the case. Apologies if I misunderstood. It seems most Brexiters these days were aware it was a bad move economically but were up for it anyway.

Jesus Christ.

HOW? Was there a money tree we were not allowed to grow if we stayed inside the EU?

Yes, yes there WAS a money tree. Ol' Mother May found it, plucked all the fruit from it and handed it over to the homophobic Northern Ireland government to bribe them into propping up her government. There's a billion quid well spent.

But as my dear late mum (a horticulturist and florist most of her life) used to tell me "if you cut back beyond the green, it won't grow back".

Mrs May stripped the money tree bare and it will never grow back now.

If you say so.

I thought they said it would free up cash that could possibly used that way, amongst other things.

Ah well.

i guess it depends how you read it

1. It would appear the Tories don't actually care about the NHS being free at the point of delivery.
2. The Tories are pinning their hopes on a quick free trade deal with the USA and some sort of Singapore-style low tax, freeport, deregulated trading space to suck in global investment to whatever unscrupulous, tax-dodging business, sheikh or oligarch fancies laundering their ill-gotten gains here in the UK.
3. The Tories now actively don't want a trade deal with the EU as it will come with strings that will hamper their vision of a tax haven utopia.

This goes beyond fulfilling the wildest dreams of Thatcher. It is some sort of UKIP wishlist on steroids.

No, if anyone is confused it's you if you think leaving the EU has genuinely given us "independence". Of course it hasn't.

No need to dream - the numbers are against you. If a referendum isn't on the agenda within a decade and actually called within 5 years of that, I will be staggered. This government will make such of mess of Brexit that people will soon question what on earth we were thinking of. As I say, give it 10 years (it won't be 30, that's for sure).

This drivel that the EU is imploding always make me chuckle though. It's literally based on zero evidence and nothing but wishful thinking from deluded xenophobes who really really want to believe they're not in massive minority being small-minded enough to insist on leaving.

Xenophobe:
a person having a dislike of or prejudice against people from other countries.

Justify implying that I am one please.

The fact that I don't share the same political opinion as you doesn't count by the way.

It's so strange, I'm sure you would be the first to agree with me that debate has become toxic, fueled by prejudice and name calling. Intolerance seems to be par for the course these days.

I'm sure you would agree with me that it's bad, I'm just not sure if you realize that it's you who is doing it?

Cost of leaving the EU = Possibly high.

Value of being self governing and independant = Priceless.

There's no possibly about it, it's already cost us more than our total 47 years worth of contributions put together and we haven't even left yet

I could possibly get on board with your optimism if it meant people would benefit and independence would mean building a better Country for everyone but it'll probably mean de-regulation, lower standards and everyone poorer at the same time

Similar to the PFI stuff in the 90s, I'll make a judgement when/if something changes. Can't see it in my lifetime. The present business model is unsustainable with increasing population and longer life expectancy with less folks paying into the system, so something needs to change sometime.

Simple next time you're ill or anyone in your family just go private, that's you sorted.

You carry on twisting what I said to suit your agenda Doc.
Not what I said at all, if it's going to continue it needs tweaking.
It's not difficult.

I like your posts, I’m sure you’re right about some aspects here.

But especially post covid, I believe that we won’t become an economy with lower taxes. Taxes across the board will increase, for higher earners in the main. The newly enlarged national debt requires servicing and over time part repaid.

I’ve followed the analyses of economists (avoiding the tedious bias of those who work for left and right wing think tanks), and they’re pretty much in unison that taxation must increase and will increase. That’s once the economy’s securely growing post covid.
