Lee is widely regarded as one of the best English coaches in the game, huge respect within the football family. It will do for me.

Both Niemi and Lee have vastly superior CV's to the 2 Spaniards we had under Garcia (I can't even remember their names). Lee was academy manager as well, not 1st XI assistant. He just needs the right role to get the hunger back.

The experience they have I think means it more likely they will be a success rather than a failure. Why do you think it's likely they will be average?

He hasn't actually done anything really. His first stint at Bolton saw him manage them for a third of a season - ONE win in 11 games. His second stint at Bolton coincided with a period of them being utter crap, and Coyle getting sacked.

Seriously, what is it that makes so many people insist this is a "fantastic" appointment? It really isn't. I'd say it's a very safe appointment. Nothing remarkable about it at all.

How does it "look promising"? I've just had a look at his Wikipedia entry and as I suspected, he's done nothing out of the ordinary.

It looks what it is - an incredibly ordinary appointment. I'm *not* saying he's a loser or anything, however.

Assistant under Benitez at Liverpool. Not too bad I'd say.

Although they may be Sami's mates, former colleagues etc, they are all well-respected and have worked at the highest level. To get somebody who has done something out of the ordinary, would we not need to appoint someone like Jose Mourinho?

Why are people wànking over this? Great appointment? How do you know? He was at Bolton FFS.

He might prove to be the best coach we've ever had, Hyppia might prove the best manager but personally I think it's more likely they'll both prove to be bang average.

Hey Simster, you may be right, but it's Friday so go and have a few beers in Reigate tonight!

3 years at Liverpool. More than most of our recent Assistant managers have done.

Its a resounding yes from me,.......... two giants of the game ( well not in Lee's case exactly).... I dont see recruitment being too difficult now, assuming the numbers add up of course.

This has to be the first time we have had a manager and assistant with the same first name (albeit spelt differently) ??

I should clarify that I'm not saying he will be utter toilet, just that I don't understand why so many people appear absolutely delighted. It's just such an ordinary appointment.

Then again, Sean Dyche was probably considered an ordinary appointment by Burnley fans when he joined...

Would love to know what you thought of Nathan Jones's appointment.
I didn't have strong views then either. I was slightly annoyed given his conduct at Yeovil when we played them, although I was pleased in a way because he'd been at the club before, during a period of success.

Meh. They were bang average on Lee's watch, Benitez got sacked whilst he was there. This was all 3 years after Istanbul. Sorry.

I could understand if we were talking about Sammy Lee the new Manager, but coach ?

Last season who could actually name any of the Spanish back room staff ? I recall we had Reuben Martinez but I don't remember if he was the goalkeeping coach or the other one, I had no clue about, plus we had the Charlton youth team coach.

The line up this year is Jones retained for continuity and has his coaching badges. A promising but largely untried manager, a goalkeeping coach, who has played at a good level and now a highly experienced coach. It seems like a balanced team to me.

Very good news. No way we will have a team of that quality as managers/ coaches and not have a team to match on the pitch

Sami jr wanted an Assistant Manager who is going to push him and not just be a "yes" man, he has got that with the experience of Sammy snr.

Sammy snr will be the man to reinforce Sami jr's ideas on the pitch etc.
