Taking people out of the supportive environment and set up is a risk - so no wonder they don't really succeed when they move on - but you can't have it both ways here.
We can't say one minute that Brighton have the best backroom staff , scouts and coaches and then as soon as they leave say it doesn't matter as its only Bloom and Barber (?) and StarlIzard (?) that count here. Albion like to be bullish about succession but its never easy and its also disruptive..
Ask RDZ about his midfield for example ?

Also Albion poach pretty much everyone - and their fans don't like it - from other clubs before we get too sniffy about it. (Jack Hinshelwood aside of course !)
Which club have Brighton poached 11 players, coaches, and admin staff from?

Agree with this. The only problem I can see is if the FA or Premier League come calling. No other club will give him the power and media exposure that he gets with us. He already serves on numerous committees and can bide his time while being very well paid.
We got Paul Barber from the FA, and he was made Vice Chairman when Liverpool came calling. He knows when he's onto a good thing.

I absolutely agree, but I am not sure what the management is supposed to do when an employee of the Albion has his head turned by Chelsea interest.....and money!
Hold them to their contract. And if their performance drops off as a result, dock their salary and keep docking it until they perform again to the level that was expected of them when they were contacted in the first place. Sometimes, we're just too soft for our own good.

Barber was at Vancouver Whitecaps before he joined us. He worked for the FA as commercial director before he went to Spurs earlier in his career.

Dan Ashworth came to us from his role as director of elite development at the FA.

Hold them to their contract.
But that's exactly what we are doing - Jewell is not starting at Chelsea until November, and is on gardening leave until then.

There's no point keeping him at his desk, working away on our transfer deals, when we know he's going to be commuting up to Stamford Bridge before the year is out.

By holding him to his contract, and making him work (sit) out his contractual notice period, we at least ensure that the information in his head will be a bit out of date when he commences his new role.

Paul Barber's most recent role, before we recruited him, was as CEO of Vancouver Whitecaps. When he left there, and returned to England, he was doing some (presumably freelance) consultancy with Coventry before joining us.

Cave is assistant to Weir right?
You have to think that Thomas will step up. Watford have got one of the most impressive records in terms of talent spotting. I know he wasn't actually there that long and was mostly focused on kids, but he seems the obvious person to be promoted.

I'm getting heartily sick of Chelsea raiding our club and cherry picking our best players and members of staff. I know that everyone is available at the right pice but we're no longer a small club and it's about time that we started to act more like it.
I agree. I personally think we should have contracts in place for all of our own personnel, reward them sufficiently with pay etc to encourage them to stay and continue to progress etc. But if another team comes along and offers far too much money to resist, or meet the required clause, then only then should we agree to let them go. If I was us, I'd ask for mad money like 100m for a relatively unproven PL midfielder of 60m for a left back who then won't even get in their team, or 20m for a manager who then is sacked a few months later only to see us employ an even better one. That would scare them off and show how big we are.

If only that's what we did. Then we wouldn't be pushed around.

I had forgotten about Vancouver. He did work for the FA previously though, didn't he?

I'm way beyond worrying about which team 'poaches' BHAFC staff but, to me, it makes a lot of sense why Chelsea ends up being their next destination:

1) To a lot of people Brighton are the envy of the footballing world, because we've got SO much right in recent years – and other clubs want to replicate that.
2) The location means that it's an easy commute, as opposed to a house move and all the upheaval that goes with it. Yes, more people work at home now (non-playing staff, obvs), but I get the impression you would be expected to get into the training ground at the drop of a hat.
3) The personnel that have gone before would've worked with a lot of the staff, so it's not beyond the realms of possibility that Chelsea Todd and co would work off recommendations from Ex Albion players, to get others and Losestanley to get the likes of Sam Jewell.
4) Spite. Potter didn't work out and ended up looking a bit of an embarrassment for Chelsea Todd. Cucurella, you could argue, has hardly set the world alight. So for 'revenge' Chelsea bods wave wads of cash in the face of Albion employees to get them to join the dark side.

There are probably others but what it tells me is that there's no point worrying about it because it's all out of our control. Where I think the club gets it right is a) having the right succession plan (or, at least, potential replacements identified in advance) and b) multiple people working across the whole process, which means that even if one person leaves, someone else knows exactly what the state of play is with a potential transfer target, scout, agent or rival club employee.

You honestly dont think lots of other people in the club know and worked with Jewell on how he got those deals done? No knowledge will be lost. He was the mouthpiece and deal finisher, I doubt very much he was the master strategist.
I don’t think that knowledge will be lost, the club is too savvy for that… but relationships and experience are personal attributes and can take time to build … I’m sure the club will have this covered, I was just stating that those where the elements we may initially miss

That's all well and good Bozza but the fact is that he's still getting paid for 9 months for doing nothing, and presumably we're going to have to hire a replacement to cover the period when Jewell is non-productive so it's a lose, lose for the club. We're unlikely ever to become a top six club unless we seriously toughen up in this scenario and pay enough to keep our top talent.

Of course. People are headhunted in every industry. But at what point do you start to think you're in the right place? I've been in the position myself where I could have gone to bigger outfits for more money, but other considerations including work/life balance, corporate culture etc, and simply being somewhere that I enjoyed working, kept me where I was. In football, of course, the imperatives may be different from the point of view of the 'corporate' objectives but the other considerations are the same.

Would you really, really see Chelsea as a better employment prospect than Brighton right now? Their main attraction seems to be 'we'll give you a shit-load more money to come here, and if it doesn't work out and we bin you in a panic clear-out in a few months, we'll give you a shit-load of money to go away.'
It'll be mostly money, it usually is. People can talk about all the other factors but they're only usually a major consideration when the money isn't materially different. It's a food chain - was exactly the same at senior levels in financial services.

I could hire directors from lower-ranked institutions because we paid more, I could usually hire from equivalent institutions by 'selling' the team even though any pay rise was modest but when the likes of Goldman Sachs came knocking on the door of one of my team they would usually **** off than you could say "50% salary increase".

has another club lost some many staff , to another club in such a short period of time
I can't think of one but perhaps this is simply a measure of our success and how far we've come?

How would you suggest we do it ?

We should pay more and negotiate long term performance related contracts, that can only be broken with our express agreement and at an extortionate cost.

We're not going to match Chelsea-type salaries for either players or any other staff, full stop.

No-one would sign such a contract, and even if they did any decent HR lawyer would tear it to shreds.
