Surely they couldn't suddenly cease to exist - what would happen to the lovely new stadium of theirs?

Yah? Whys that? In huge debt, with a poor side, in a poor league + probably more shit behind the scenes that the general public don't know about. It's really not a good investment..

Spot on, the headline sounds a bit scary, but you read the story below and it mentions other consortia as well as the one fronted by Matt Le Tissier that seems to be in pole position (but "hasn't come up with the goods" says the administrator).
You read between the lines and it sounds like the administrator is telling interested parties to put up or shut up.

I have no inside knowledge, I just know that no club the size of Saints with a decent stadium has ever folded. For 30 years now we've heard about big teams about to disappear, it never happens though, it's just he tiddlers who go.

Somebody/consortium is probably gonna get it for a song but the potential is too big for the club to be allowed to fold..imo.

Yeah it probably will happen to a big club one day but I do not see any way that Saints are gonna fold and I expect to be taking my seat in St Mary's next season as we turn them over

Leeds only just survived with the crook that is Ken Bates and from what I gather, Southampton are in worse straights. Question for someone, do they own their stadium and training grounds or do they lease them?

Even with a massive debt the stadium is an asset - can't they remortgage ?

Put Rupert Lowe in the stocks in central southampton, make rotten vegatables readily avialable to the people for a small price. Surely can raise a bit of capital that way!! :lolol:

Do they own it ? I feel sorry for their creditors as it's not much use for anything else.

That was what I thought - maybe there could be a decent South coast rugby union team set up :clap2: Apart from that, surely concerts is the only other use!

The thing that bothers me (and I'm sure, many others) is the fact that so many clubs have hit huge financial problems after building a new Stadium. Darlington clearly built a stadium far too big for the job but Saints, Derby, Leicester and Coventry have all had huge problems and let's face a fact, they are all bigger clubs than us (at present anyway).

the ground is saints (holding company) the council wanted to buy it from the administrators and lease it back to the club, then ben steele and dave (?) hubbard rolled up with 'cash' in their pockets and did not want to do any due diligence and just buy everything in one lump 'cash' deal and so the council stepped back. steele is a dodgy, dodgy businessmen though, if i were a saints fan and he came on board - with or without matt le tiss, i would be pretty darn concerned about his motives.

Bigger clubs, possibly.

But they are NOT as well managed financially as we are. A fact for which we should be ever grateful.

The difference between those clubs and us is that the first 4 were all ex-premiership with huge wage budgets and all tried to spend their way back into the top flight and failed leaving them saddled with enormous debts. Darlington had a crooked chairman who somehow managed to build a 25,000 seat stadium for a 3-4000 fanbase and then the chairman came unstuck and the finances unravelled again leaving the club saddled with debt. We are not in either of those situations and should be able to emulate clubs with new stadia who started off in the lower 2 leagues and have managed to be successful without going bust e.g Swansea, Hull, Doncaster etc.
